The role is responsible for establishing, maintaining, and continuously improving environmental systems, standards, and ways of working to ensure compliance with HS2, MDJV, and Mace Construct requirements. - Lead environmental incident and complaint investigations, including evidence gathering, root cause analysis, corrective action close-out, and reporting to senior leadership and HS2 where required.
- Oversee environmental monitoring on site and maintain accurate records of environmental performance and compliance.
- Undertake regular site inspections and audits of construction activities and supply chain operations.
- Periodically review method statements and technical documents to ensure completeness and conformance with contractual, legal, and environmental requirements.
- Build project-level understanding of relevant environmental requirements and develop mitigations to minimize impacts on the construction programme.
- Work with Planning Managers to incorporate key environmental and sustainability milestones into the programme.
- Periodically review environmental processes within the project Quality Management System and align improvements with relevant MDJV teams.
- Develop and maintain the environmental risks and issues log for reporting to senior leadership.
- Lead delivery of the project’s carbon target and carbon management approach, working closely with design, delivery, and commercial teams.
- Lead the project’s BREEAM certification requirements, ensuring evidence, responsibilities, and progress are actively managed.
- Engage the supply chain on environmental and sustainability requirements, performance expectations, and opportunities for improvement.
- Promote innovation and best practice across environmental management, sustainability performance, and carbon reduction outcomes.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
