About The Role
What will I be doing?
The Sustainability Manager plays a key role in embedding SUEZ's People Planet Profit (PPP) approach across all business activities. The role involves:
- Coordinating and supporting the Sustainability Champions Network
- Leading sustainability projects
- Managing policy and legislative consultation responses
- Working closely with stakeholders across the organisation to drive positive change
The Sustainability Manager also provides expert guidance and support to ensure sustainability objectives are achieved while meeting the expectations and priorities of the GMCA.
- Lead the delivery, monitoring and evidencing of contractual Social Value commitments, ensuring compliance with GMCA requirements and maximising positive environmental, social and economic outcomes for Greater Manchester.
- Develop, coordinate and implement sustainability initiatives and improvement projects that support SUEZ's People Planet Profit objectives and contribute to the achievement of contractual and corporate sustainability targets.
- Identify, evaluate and promote new sustainability, social value and circular economy opportunities, working with operational teams and external partners to drive continuous improvement and innovation.
- Prepare, analyse and present sustainability and social value performance reports for internal governance forums, senior management, customers and external stakeholders, ensuring information is accurate, timely and actionable.
- Represent the sustainability function at internal and external meetings, working groups, audits and stakeholder forums, building effective relationships and influencing positive change.
- Monitor emerging sustainability trends, policy developments and legislative changes to identify potential risks, opportunities and business impacts, providing recommendations and guidance to stakeholders.
- Support contract mobilisation, improvement plans and business development activities by providing sustainability expertise, performance data and evidence of best practice.
- Ensure sustainability and social value commitments are embedded within operational activities, supporting managers and site teams to translate strategic objectives into practical actions.
- Facilitate engagement with local communities, charities, educational establishments and partner organisations to enhance social value delivery and strengthen SUEZ's reputation within Greater Manchester.

What are the Requirements?
- Degree-level qualification (or equivalent experience) in Sustainability, Environmental Management, Waste Management, Geography, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
- Professional membership of IEMA, CIWM, ISR or a similar professional body.
- Experience of working within, or alongside, local authority waste and recycling services and an understanding of local government priorities and decision-making processes.
- Working knowledge of LoOP and TOMS (Themes, Outcomes and Measures) software and methodologies for recording, measuring, evidencing and reporting social value outcomes.
- Adaptable – able to engage, influence and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
- Emotionally intelligent – to be able to communicate effectively and adjust to different opinions, demands and emotions of each stakeholder.
- Management of projects and/or multiple workstreams.
- Think creatively and bring new and innovative ideas forward.
- Self-starter, who can work independently, but also as part of a team.
- Strong written skills, with an attention to detail.
- Capable of accessing, manipulating and analysing data from multiple sources.
- Confident communicator and influencer.
- Ability to balance a varied workload and prioritise key activities.
