Job Title: Sustainability Manager: Standing Portfolio

Department: Operations

LOCATION: Central London (Regent's Place, NW1) Hybrid – 4 days in office

REPORTING TO: Head of Environmental Sustainability

TYPE OF CONTRACT: FTC (12 months)

THE ROLE

The Sustainability Manager: Standing portfolio will be responsible for leading and implementing our sustainability strategy across our standing portfolio. The role will be focussed on operational performance at the asset level, supporting asset and property management teams in all aspects of sustainability management including the delivery of asset level decarbonisation pathways and wider sustainability KPIs.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Lead the coordination and delivery of corporate and asset specific targets in line with 2030 Strategy and our longer term Science Based Targets, with a focus on asset level decarbonisation, climate resilience planning, and nature outcomes.
  • Operationalise British Land’s new Science Based Targets, embedding them into asset management and operational decision-making.
  • Work closely with development colleagues to provide sustainability feedback from an operational perspective and to ensure development projects smoothly transition into the standing portfolio. Work as part of our Soft Landings approach to ensure standing assets perform as per design standards, with particular focus on operational performance and NABERS ratings.
  • Work closely with leasing colleagues to ensure that green lease clauses and on floor decarbonisation measures are included in leasing agreements and subsequent fit outs.
  • Project manage specific sustainability projects such as further solar PV installations.
  • Work with supply chain to improve sustainability performance.
  • Lead and coordinate compliance with current and forthcoming environmental legislation, including updates to MEES and the Heat and Network Regulations.
  • Support customer and JV engagement across the standing portfolio, attending customer forums and presenting asset pathways/action plans as required.
  • Support and maintain operational certifications and indices, including BREEAM In-Use and GRESB requirements.
  • Responsible for supporting operational sustainability reporting and feeding into the Annual Report and Sustainability Accounts (including TCFD and TNFD disclosures).
  • Identify AI use cases to lower costs and improve the efficiency of processes.

Management and collaboration

  • Act as a sustainability expert to guide and support asset and property management teams through successful delivery of our 2030 Strategy and longer term SBTi targets.
  • Engage and collaborate across business departments particularly with Property and Asset Management as well as Development colleagues to embedded sustainability across the business
  • Assist Leasing and Marketing with customer engagement to ensure positive communication of sustainability across our portfolio

Corporate and Industry Leadership

  • Review government, local policy, industry guidance and commitments and where appropriate integrate into BL’s documentation.
  • Represent BL in industry working groups specialising in embodied and operational carbon and other sustainability topics e.g. the BB

About You

Key Competencies:

  • Leads and influences large teams to achieve outcomes for complex projects and successfully builds relationships across internal and external teams.
  • Highly competent in carbon and energy accounting/modelling, engineering and operational building technologies.
  • Ability to analyse data to inform decision making and present robust business cases for sustainability and energy projects.
  • Excellent project and people management skills, good presenter with the ability to articulate complex topics in simple terms.
  • Delivery focused with good organisation skills to manage multiple projects and varied teams at once.
  • Good communication skills to articulate sustainability to a wide variety of stakeholders with varied understanding to ensure our business case and value is clearly presented eg. Marketing brochures etc.

Knowledge, Experience And Qualifications

  • Significant experience in the sustainability in the property and construction industry.
  • Experience of sustainability frameworks including NABERS, CRREM, SBTi, Net Zero Carbon Building Standard, EPC and BREEAM In-use
  • Engineering experience with ability to review whole building M&E systems, experience of BMS and EMS systems
  • Experience in completing submissions to ESG benchmarks, such as CDP, DJSI and GRESB.
  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams with the ability to quantify the impact of decisions from a cost and value perspective.
  • Strong professional network and networking skills.
