Sustainability Operations Specialist

We have an exciting new vacancy for a Sustainability Operations Specialist at Commercial. In this role you will lead and manage projects and initiatives that improve sustainability performance and ensure risk and compliance management with environmental regulations. As a Sustainability Operations Specialist you will play a key role in our national and international reporting obligations.

You will work closely with the Head of Sustainability to provide advice and collaborate with colleagues across the business to ensure best practice, and work closely with the Sustainability Co-ordinator to ensure a data-driven approach.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities as a Sustainability Operations Specialist will be to:

  • Lead on the management and improvement of ISO14001 ensuring compliance with relevant policies and legislations is embedded into Commercial’s culture.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Operations to align shared outcomes and audits for ISO14001 and ISO45001.
  • Lead annual reporting obligations including the UN Global Compact Communication of Progress, Modern Slavery, and Social Value; as well as provide relevant support on UKSRS, SECR and PPN06 annual carbon reduction plan.
  • Work with the Head of Sustainability to identify, develop and drive company-wide improvement projects including those that advance Ecovadis and CDP performance.
  • Lead on operational data management and insights including Net Zero data, and work collaboratively with the Sustainability Co-ordinator to process data and track progress against sustainability strategy goals.
  • Research and keep up to date with changes to environmental legislation to provide expert advice and support to teams across the business.

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Geography, or a related field.
  • Experience of leading ISO 14001 and being accountable for associated legislative requirements. Knowledge of the new ISO14001:2026 standard.
  • Knowledge of sustainability practices in supply chains and operations - risks, regulations, and emerging trends.
  • Experience of basic sustainability reporting – SECR, Carbon Reduction Plans, Social Value or GRI etc.
  • Experience of analysing environmental and carbon data and independently identifying and presenting trends, issues, and opportunities.
  • Project management skills with experience of leading multi-stakeholder projects that deliver tangible sustainability outcomes.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to think laterally, creatively and independently in complex scenarios with no established precedent.
  • Systems thinker, able to challenge established practices and processes to achieve change objectives.
