Sustainable Energy Engineering Intern (Gasification Pilot Instrumentation) — Zero-X, MFC — Canggu, Bali

Gasification pilot instrumentation · MFC · On-site, Canggu, Bali · 4–6 months

What does it take to read a noisy signal off a real gasifier — feedstock moisture, bed pressure, syngas temperature — and turn it into campaign data clean enough to act on before the next run? This is a Sustainable Energy Engineering Intern building instrumentation and data capture for the MFC gasification pilot — short-cycle campaign analysis on real feedstock with Zero-X. You work for MFC, the operating company behind the pilot; Zero-X is the engineering track. Zero-X is named to Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies list (Energy, 2018) and funded by PTJ (Projekträger Jülich, the German federal research agency). The larger point is proving waste can become clean power. You leave with the proof employers hire on: an instrument loop and campaign dataset built against real plant noise. Everyone has a degree. Almost nobody has proof.

What you build

Not a task list. The thing you build.

  • You build the instrumentation ladder for the gasification pilot — sensor placement, wiring, calibration records, and the log structure that makes every run comparable.
  • You work on the short-cycle campaign set: feedstock loading, warm-up, steady-state holds, and shutdown sequences that produce repeatable data.
  • You are on the hook for the capture chain: sampling rates, timestamp alignment, and the flag list when a reading goes bad.
  • A run report another operator can read without asking which thermocouple was where.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

The bar

  • You have built a data logger or monitoring loop outside coursework, and you can name what broke when the signal got dirty.
  • A wiring loom annotated well enough that another person can commission it without asking you.
  • A short-cycle test log held straight across warm-up, steady state, and shutdown without dropping a timestamp.
  • A hard measurement problem kept on the bench until the readings repeated.

Who this is for

  • Work until the signal is clean.
  • Write down what the sensor actually read, not what should have been there.
  • The question at month two and month twenty is the same: can this data be trusted to make the next run better?
  • Commissioning will humble you.

Where you do it — and why here

Thirty years building companies — New York, London, Tokyo, the Valley — and then it stopped mattering where the work happened. So the program runs on-site in Canggu. A modern company costs twelve people and a toolchain — so being wrong six times a year is part of how we build. The campus is 4,000 sqm, and the people who run the companies are on it every day. Epic Solutions PT runs the on-site program in Canggu, Bali. What this location buys is attention, not a view.

Terms

Unpaid under Indonesian law. A room is available on campus — rent paid by you. Epic Solutions PT hosts the on-site program and assists with the C22B internship visa process. Daily lunch on us. Starting September.

Questions about the fit or the timeline? Tell us — we’ll talk you through how the program actually runs.

Requirements

  • A degree in mechanical, chemical, energy, or process engineering — you have proven you can finish something.
  • You drive Claude Code, Hermes, or Codex every day and catch what the AI gets wrong before the data runs.
  • A thing you built that nobody asked you to build.
  • Four to six months on-site.

How to apply

Apply via the LinkedIn application field. Submit your CV and the repository. Include a thing you built — a data logger, a test rig, a wiring job, or a campaign log — and a sentence on the hardest failure mode you hit.

A finished CV was never the point. What counts is a thing you’ve built and the drive to build the next one. That is who we are looking for.
