What does it take to hold a clean signal off a gasifier running real feedstock — and keep the data honest when the probe drifts and the feed changes under heat?
This is a Sustainable Energy Engineering Intern building the instrumentation and campaign analysis for the MFC gasification pilot — real feedstock, short-cycle runs, data capture from first probe to final mass balance. MFC is the operating company behind the Zero-X gasification pilot; Zero-X was named to Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies list (Energy, 2018) and funded by Projekträger Jülich (PTJ), the German federal research agency. This is phase one: getting the right people in to start. Epic Solutions PT runs the on-site program. You leave with the one proof employers hire on: a thing you built that nobody asked you to build. Everyone has a degree. Almost nobody has proof.
What you build
Not a task list. The thing you build. Commissioning will humble you. The data lies until you make it stop.
- The gasifier instrumentation package — sensors, probes, and the wiring that carries real temperatures, pressures, and gas composition. You build it and keep it clean.
- The data capture pipeline — every channel time-stamped and tied to a feedstock batch. You work on it until the log reads straight across a full short-cycle campaign.
- The short-cycle campaign log — run sheets, anomalies, and the mass balance that says what the gasifier actually did. You are on the hook for that.
- The calibration fixture — probe drift named and corrected before the run, not after.

Who this is for
This is for recent engineering graduates who can sit next to a hot gasifier, correct a drifted probe, and stay until the run sheet is useful. You work until the data reads clean. The two-year question is whether you want to be on the instrumentation side of energy hardware — not watching it from a distance. If the answer is yes, the rest is bench time.
Where you do it — and why here
Thirty years building companies — New York, London, Tokyo, the Valley — and then it stopped mattering where the work happened. So the program runs on-site in Canggu, Bali. A modern company costs twelve people and a toolchain — so being wrong six times a year is part of how we build. Monday reset / Friday ship — send what you built. The campus is 4,000 sqm, and the people who run the companies are on it every day. You are not in a satellite office or a coworking shelf; you are next to the people who read the same run sheets. The bench sits close to the plant floor because a probe tells the truth in place, not from a desk. What this location buys is attention, not a view.

What happens after
Seventeen interns have moved into full-time roles across the group. For this track, the destination is Melbourne — Energaia Institute, beside Monash — if the work holds up. The destination role and its terms are agreed before you commit, never after. That is the path. Earned, not guaranteed.

- Epic Solutions PT hosts the on-site program and assists with the C22B internship visa process; the visa fee is yours.

Requirements
- A degree in mechanical, energy, or electrical engineering, or equivalent — you have proven you can finish something.
- Claude Code, Hermes, or Codex driven every day, with the AI’s misses caught before the run sheet ships.
- A thing built that nobody asked you to build.
- On-site for the full program.
