Band 2 – Switchboard Operator – Stepping Hill Hospital
Nightshift
27 hours per week
Working hours worked three nights per week over a three week rota
We are looking for enthusiastic and reliable individual to join our busy hospital Switchboard team. As the first point of contact for staff, patients, relatives, and external callers, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring effective communication and supporting patient safety across the Trust.
This is a fast‑paced and rewarding role where no two shifts are the same. The successful candidate will work the core hours as above, however flexibility is essential, and you may be required to work morning or night shifts in line with service needs.
Important Notice on Visa Sponsorship Eligibility
Please note that whilst the trust does offer sponsorship this role is unfortunately not eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK Health and Care Worker visa route. This is due to the position not meeting the minimum salary threshold of £25,000 per annum and/or the required skill level set by UK Visas and Immigration.
We appreciate your interest in this opportunity and encourage applications from candidates who already have the right to work in the UK.
What You’ll Do
- Handle high‑volume internal and external calls
- Respond immediately to emergency calls (e.g. cardiac arrest, fire, security)
- Activate emergency response teams following Trust protocols
- Operate and maintain the bleep system
- Support on‑call staff and maintain updated rotas
- Provide out‑of‑hours support to departments including the Patient Centre
- Work as part of a supportive team, with some lone‑working shifts

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
