Job Title - Switchgear Engineer

Department - Engineering / Operations

Location - Field-based, South-East UK critical power sites, with occasional UK-wide and EMEA travel

Employment Type - Full-time

The Switchgear Engineer is responsible for the installation, modification, maintenance, fault-finding and repair of low voltage (LV) switchgear and associated power distribution equipment across client sites.

The role covers commercial, industrial and critical power environments, supporting planned shutdowns, maintenance contracts, installation projects and commissioning activities. The Switchgear Engineer works closely with commissioning engineers, project managers and client representatives to deliver safe, high-quality engineering services.

Key Responsibilities

Switchgear Installation & Modification

  • Installation of LV switchgear and distribution equipment
  • Busbar installation, modification and extensions
  • Panel board installation and modifications
  • Cable installation and termination into switchgear
  • Installation of MCCs and distribution boards
  • Installation of protection devices and control wiring
  • Retrofit and upgrade works to existing installations

Maintenance & Fault Finding

  • Planned preventative maintenance (PPM) of LV switchgear
  • Fault finding on LV switchgear and associated systems
  • Replacement of breakers, contactors and protection devices
  • Identification and rectification of electrical faults
  • Inspection of switchgear components and systems
  • Support thermal inspection remedial works where required

Shutdown & Outage Works

  • Work during planned shutdowns and outages
  • Safe isolation and reinstatement of systems
  • Support energisation activities
  • Assist commissioning engineers during system bring-into-service
  • Work within client outage constraints and deadlines

Site Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics
  • Work to specifications and project scope
  • Produce accurate job reports and documentation
  • Liaise professionally with clients and site personnel
  • Identify additional works opportunities
  • Maintain high safety and workmanship standards

  • Work in accordance with company Health & Safety procedures
  • Follow RAMS and permit-to-work systems
  • Use appropriate PPE
  • Maintain safe isolation procedures
  • Report hazards, incidents and near misses
  • Maintain professional site standards

Essential Requirements

  • Experience working on LV switchgear and power distribution equipment
  • Strong electrical fault-finding ability
  • Ability to read electrical drawings and schematics
  • Experience working on live client sites
  • Strong safety awareness
  • Good communication skills
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Willingness to travel, including occasional overnight stays
  • Right to work in the UK

Desirable Requirements

  • City & Guilds / NVQ Level 3 Electrical Installation (or equivalent)
  • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)
  • ECS / CSCS Card
  • Experience with switchgear manufacturers such as Schneider Electric, ABB, Siemens, Eaton or Terasaki
  • Industrial / critical infrastructure experience
  • IPAF / PASMA
