Senior Automation Systems Architect – Contract
Location: Glasgow
Duration: 6 months initially
Start: ASAP
On-site: 3 days a week
We are looking for a Senior Automation Systems Architect to lead the integration and delivery of a large, highly automated facility involving robotics, materials handling, control systems, and multiple equipment suppliers.
This is a senior systems integration and technical delivery role, ideal for someone who has worked on complex automation environments such as airport baggage handling, parcel sortation, automated warehouses, ASRS, or large-scale manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end automation and systems architecture.
- Lead multi-vendor integration across mechanical, electrical, controls, and software systems.
- Define system interfaces, failure modes, and recovery processes.
- Lead factory and site testing, system integration, and the process of getting the complete system fully operational.
- Review supplier designs and manage technical requirements through design, installation, and testing.
- Develop throughput, capacity, and performance models.
- Identify and resolve technical issues during installation and testing.
- Support final performance testing and handover to the operational team.
- Provide technical leadership across suppliers and internal engineering teams.

Experience Required
- Solid experience in industrial, logistics, manufacturing, or facility automation.
- Experience taking complex automation projects from architecture through to installation, testing, and operational handover.
- Strong multi-vendor integration experience.
- PLC / safety PLC experience — Siemens, Beckhoff, Rockwell, or equivalent.
- SCADA, HMI, and industrial networking experience.
- Knowledge of OPC UA, Profinet, EtherCAT, or Modbus TCP.
- Experience with WCS, WES, or MES.
- Strong understanding of machinery and functional safety.
- Experience with FAT, SAT, and system integration testing.
- Strong technical documentation and stakeholder-management skills.
