System Integration HW & SW Test Engineer
Building Management Systems | Product Qualification | UL 864 Readiness
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced System Integration HW & SW Test Engineer to qualify Building Management System (BMS) products and solutions, with a particular focus on system-level testing and UL 864 certification readiness.
The role combines hands-on hardware and software testing with the design and development of physical system test environments. The successful candidate will build representative BMS test systems, integrate hardware and software components, develop structured test suites, and execute system-level qualification testing.
A key responsibility will be preparing products and systems for UL 864 certification through comprehensive pre-certification testing, as well as executing applicable self-certification and internal qualification testing.
The engineer will work closely with software development, hardware development, system engineering, product management, and certification specialists to identify issues early and ensure that products meet functional, system, and certification requirements.
The role will initially have a strong focus on establishing the test environment and performing hands-on testing. Over time, the engineer will develop repeatable test suites and identify opportunities for test automation, either implementing automation directly or working together with test automation and software development colleagues.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, configure, and maintain physical system integration test environments for BMS products and solutions.
- Integrate hardware, software, controllers, networks, field devices, and other required system components into representative test configurations.
- Perform HW/SW system integration testing to verify functionality, interoperability, stability, and expected system behavior.
- Develop and maintain structured system-level test plans, test cases, and reusable test suites.
- Perform pre-certification testing to identify issues before formal UL 864 certification activities.
- Execute applicable self-certification, qualification, and compliance test activities.
- Interpret UL 864 requirements and translate relevant requirements into practical system test scenarios and test cases.
- Reproduce, analyze, document, and communicate defects discovered during system testing.
- Work closely with software and hardware development teams to support root-cause investigation and verification of corrections.
- Maintain test configurations and ensure that test setups are repeatable and representative of intended product configurations.
- Document test results and provide clear evidence of system behavior and compliance.
- Identify opportunities for test automation and develop test cases with automation in mind.
- Automate suitable system tests directly or collaborate with software developers and test automation engineers to implement automated testing.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of system integration, qualification, and certification processes.
- Support formal certification activities by providing tested configurations, test evidence, technical information, and engineering support.
Required Qualifications
- Experience in system testing, system integration testing, or HW/SW integration testing.
- Strong hands-on experience working with systems containing both hardware and software components.
- Experience designing, setting up, configuring, and troubleshooting physical test systems.
- Strong knowledge and practical experience with UL 864 requirements and testing.
- Ability to translate system and certification requirements into structured and repeatable test cases.
- Experience developing test plans, test cases, test procedures, and test reports.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills across hardware, software, communication, and system boundaries.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of complex system-level test activities.
- Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively with hardware engineers, software developers, system engineers, and certification specialists.
- Good English communication skills, both spoken and written, including the ability to clearly document test procedures, results, issues, and technical findings.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Building Management Systems (BMS), Building Automation Systems (BAS), fire systems, smoke-control systems, or related building-control technologies.
- Experience preparing products or systems for third-party certification.
- Experience working directly with certification organizations or certification laboratories.
- Experience with automated system testing and test frameworks.
- Programming or scripting experience, for example Python or similar technologies used for test automation.
- Experience testing communication networks, field buses, controllers, I/O, sensors, actuators, or other connected building-system components.
- Experience with issue-tracking, requirements-management, test-management, and CI/CD tools.
- Experience with Agile software and product-development processes.

- A robust and representative physical system test environment is established and maintained.
- HW/SW integration issues are identified early in the product-development lifecycle.
- Product releases are systematically pre-tested against applicable UL 864 requirements before formal certification activities.
- Certification-related test cases are documented, repeatable, and traceable.
- Test suites evolve from individual manual tests into structured and reusable system test suites.
- Suitable tests are progressively automated, reducing repetitive manual testing and improving regression-test coverage.
- Test results and identified issues are clearly documented and effectively communicated to engineering teams.
- Software, hardware, systems, and certification teams have a common understanding of product readiness and remaining technical risks.
- Certification activities become more predictable because issues are discovered during internal qualification rather than during formal certification.

For this U.S. based position, the expected pay range is USD 101,600 - USD 152,400 per year. This pay range includes base pay and short-term incentives. The compensation range for this full-time position applies to candidates located within the United States. Our pay ranges are determined by reviewing roles of similar responsibility and level. Within the pay range, individual pay is determined by several factors including performance, knowledge, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
