System Research Engineer (Contractor) - Computer Systems / AI Infrastructure / Distributed Systems / Research

We are currently partnered with a global technology and research organisation developing next-generation computing, communications, and AI infrastructure technologies. Its UK research organisation works closely with leading academic institutions and multidisciplinary engineering teams to translate fundamental research into practical, real-world technology solutions.

As part of the continued expansion of its Systems Infrastructure Research team in Edinburgh, they are looking to hire several System Research Engineers / Research Scientists on a contract basis to conduct cutting-edge research across computer systems and AI infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary research and engineering teams to investigate emerging computer systems and AI infrastructure technologies
  • Rapidly develop and test proof-of-concept prototypes to validate research concepts in real-world industrial environments
  • Translate research ideas into practical implementations and experimental systems
  • Profile and optimise operating systems and large-scale distributed systems for performance, scalability, and efficiency
  • Investigate system performance across heterogeneous computing architectures, including CPU and NPU platforms
  • Design and execute experiments to evaluate new system architectures, technologies, and optimisation techniques
  • Analyse experimental results and use data-driven insights to refine research directions and system implementations

Key requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline
  • Strong understanding of research methodologies and the ability to formulate, investigate, and validate technical hypotheses
  • In-depth knowledge of one or more of the following areas:
    • Operating systems
    • Distributed systems
    • Cloud computing
    • Machine learning systems
  • Strong programming skills with expert-level knowledge of at least one programming language, such as C or C++
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to design experiments, analyse results, and communicate technical conclusions clearly

Desirable:

  • PhD in Operating Systems, Distributed Systems, Machine Learning Systems, Computer Systems, or a related field
  • Research experience within computer systems, AI infrastructure, or high-performance computing
