System Safety Design Engineer
Play a key role in taking the HS2 Track programme from design into delivery with a Tier 1 infrastructure contractor. Working across the wider alliance, you will help resolve hazards, develop Safety Requirements and build the evidence needed to move one of the UK’s most significant rail programmes forward safely.
Main Responsibilities
- Support System Safety activities across the HS2 Track programme.
- Undertake hazard identification and risk assessment to determine potential causes, consequences and appropriate mitigations.
- Support the recording and management of hazards and associated safety documentation.
- Help define Safety Requirements and integrate them into the design.
- Support the development of Safety Cases and associated evidence.
- Undertake safety analyses including Fault Tree Analysis, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis and Preliminary Hazard Analysis.
- Work with systems, hardware, software and design engineers to resolve safety issues.
- Support compliance with applicable railway safety standards and the project System Safety Management Plan.
- Participate in safety reviews, audits and incident investigations.
- Produce clear technical reports and communicate findings to project stakeholders.

Candidate Requirements
- Degree-qualified engineer or equivalent technical qualification.
- Experience in System Safety, Safety Assurance, Functional Safety, RAMS or Safety and Reliability Engineering.
- Practical experience of hazard identification, risk assessment and the development of appropriate mitigations.
- Experience developing or contributing to Safety Requirements and Safety Cases.
- Working knowledge of Fault Tree Analysis, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis and Preliminary Hazard Analysis.
- Understanding of applicable railway safety standards and safety-management processes.
- Experience within rail, transportation, infrastructure or another safety-critical engineering environment.
- Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary designers and engineering specialists.
- Strong technical writing, analytical and stakeholder-communication skills.

Desirable Experience
- Practical experience personally undertaking or materially developing FTA, FMEA/FMECA or PHA.
- Experience managing hazards across subsystem and overall system interfaces.
- Understanding of how RAM analysis supports safety functions and safety evidence.
- Experience of CSM-RA, Hazard Records or structured safety arguments.
- Major UK rail, high-speed rail, HS2 or Track-related experience.
- Membership of a relevant engineering or safety professional body.
