The Role
The Power System Test SME is a senior technical authority responsible for the validation, testing, troubleshooting, and optimization of electrical power systems. The role involves leading complex testing, commissioning, protection verification, and power system studies to ensure network reliability, equipment performance, operational safety, and compliance with industry regulations and standards. The SME provides expert guidance throughout the lifecycle of transmission, distribution, and generation assets, supporting both project delivery and operational excellence.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Lead the planning, execution, and review of power system testing and commissioning activities for transmission and distribution networks.
- Perform and oversee Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), Integrated System Testing (IST), and commissioning activities.
- Validate the functionality and performance of electrical equipment, including:
- Protection relays
- Transformers
- Switchgear
- Circuit breakers
- Control and SCADA systems
- Substation automation systems
- Conduct power system studies, simulations, and analysis using industry-standard tools.
- Investigate system disturbances, faults, equipment failures, and power quality issues, providing effective corrective actions.
- Review test procedures, engineering designs, protection settings, and commissioning documentation.
- Support grid integration, network expansion, renewable energy connections, and system upgrades.
- Ensure compliance with applicable industry standards, grid codes, safety procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to engineers, commissioning teams, and project stakeholders.
- Collaborate with operations, engineering, asset management, and project teams to improve system performance and reliability.
- Produce detailed technical reports, test results, root cause analyses, and recommendations.

Essential Skills/Qualification/Experience
Key Skills
- Strong expertise in electrical power systems, transmission and distribution networks.
- Extensive experience in power system testing, commissioning, and fault analysis.
- In-depth knowledge of:
- Protection and control systems
- Substation automation
- Grid operations
- Power quality analysis
- SCADA and EMS systems
- Proficiency with power system modelling and simulation tools such as:
- DIgSILENT PowerFactory
- ETAP
- PSCAD
- PSS®E
- EMTP
- Experience with relay testing tools and commissioning equipment.
- Strong understanding of electrical standards including:
- IEC Standards
- IEEE Standards
- Grid Code requirements
- Utility-specific engineering practices
- Ability to troubleshoot complex electrical system issues and provide technical resolutions.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or equivalent professional accreditation preferred.
- Relevant certifications in protection, commissioning, testing, or power systems engineering.
- Experience working within utility, transmission system operator (TSO), distribution network operator (DNO), renewable energy, or critical infrastructure environments.
Experience
- Experience supporting National Grid, NESO, DNOs, generation plants, or large infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of renewable energy integration, battery energy storage systems (BESS), HVDC, and smart grid technologies.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity considerations for operational technology (OT) and control systems.
- Experience in high-voltage (HV) and extra-high-voltage (EHV) environments.
