Enterprise Infrastructure Systems Administrator

We are looking for an experienced Enterprise Infrastructure Systems Administrator to join a specialist technical team supporting mission-critical IT infrastructure in a highly operational environment.

The role is an on-site Northwood, GB mission and focuses on the administration, deployment, maintenance and technical support of enterprise infrastructure, including Microsoft Windows Server, Active Directory, Exchange, VMware virtualization, SAN/NAS storage and end-user systems.

You will work closely with infrastructure engineers, technicians and operational stakeholders to ensure that systems remain secure, available, reliable and fully documented. The position will involve supporting the transfer and activation of deployed IT installations and providing on-site, remote and off-site technical support to operational environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the deployment, transfer and activation of IT installations during operational handovers.
  • Provide on-site, remote and off-site technical support for enterprise infrastructure and mission-critical systems.
  • Assist with the daily administration of Microsoft Windows Server environments.
  • Administer Active Directory, including Domain Controllers, Group Policy, Security Policy and DNS services.
  • Support the administration of Microsoft Exchange Server services.
  • Administer VMware ESXi and VMware vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) environments.
  • Perform VMware lifecycle management, software and firmware upgrades, ESXi upgrades and related maintenance activities.
  • Support the deployment and maintenance of virtualized infrastructure, including bare-metal deployments where required.
  • Assist with the administration of SAN and NAS storage environments, including applicable firmware upgrades.
  • Configure and maintain iSCSI storage within virtualized environments.
  • Conduct routine system and infrastructure backups in accordance with established SLAs and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Support the administration and maintenance of hardware and software for end-user devices.
  • Deploy and manage signed digital certificates across relevant systems.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, system records, procedures and user guides.
  • Work closely with other infrastructure technicians and engineers to resolve incidents and maintain service availability.
  • Participate in incident and problem management activities.
  • Provide technical support during equipment failures and infrastructure incidents, including the ability to deploy at short notice when required.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of infrastructure administration processes and operational procedures.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Higher vocational qualification/diploma in IT or a related discipline.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience in enterprise infrastructure administration.
  • Strong practical experience with VMware virtualization, including:
    • VMware ESXi
    • VMware vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA)
    • ESXi upgrades
    • Lifecycle management
    • Bare-metal deployments
  • Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with Microsoft Windows Server technologies.
  • Practical experience with:
    • Active Directory
    • Group Policy
    • DNS
    • Microsoft Exchange
  • Experience administering SAN/NAS storage environments.
  • Familiarity with iSCSI configuration in virtualized environments.
  • Experience deploying and managing signed digital certificates.
  • Experience performing infrastructure backups and restoration procedures.
  • Understanding of ITIL-based IT service management.
  • Practical knowledge of incident and problem management processes.
  • Ability to produce clear and accurate technical documentation and user guides.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with a structured and methodical approach to complex technical issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong customer/service focus and the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a wider engineering team.
  • Willingness and ability to respond to urgent operational requirements and deploy at short notice when required.
  • Active NATO security Clearance.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related discipline.
  • Postgraduate or advanced technical training in enterprise infrastructure.
  • Experience working with operational or mission-critical IT/CIS environments.
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or equivalent certification.
  • Microsoft infrastructure certification, such as Windows Server or Identity-related certifications.
  • ITIL Foundation certification.
