Systems & Autonomy Software Integration Engineer
We are seeking a hands-on Systems & Autonomy Software Integration Engineer to join the airborne autonomy engineering squad supporting Project Links. This role is focused on the architectural integration, reverse-engineering, and functional deployment of high-level autonomous decision-making algorithms, multi-asset task allocation logic, and collaborative behaviors within an established C++ software baseline.
The successful candidate will bridge the gap between high-level autonomy concepts and practical software execution—taking legacy and third-party software components, reverse-engineering undocumented code, and integrating them into synthetic test environments for airborne system-of-systems evaluation.
Key Responsibilities
- Software Architecture & Integration: Ingest, review, and reverse-engineer legacy C++ software components to design and execute modular software integration interfaces.
- Autonomy Algorithm Implementation: Integrate decision-making logic, dynamic task allocation algorithms (distributing mission tasks across multiple autonomous air vehicles), and swarm collaboration behaviors into the core platform architecture.
- Synthetic Test & Evaluation (SIL): Deploy and validate autonomy software within high-fidelity Synthetic Simulation Environments (Software-in-the-Loop), verifying system performance before hardware integration.
- Middleware & Data Interoperability: Define and manage inter-process communication (IPC) and Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) data flows between high-level autonomy managers and low-level flight control interfaces.
- Third-Party Component Ingestion: Interface and integrate external software modules, subsystems, and operational data sources (including potential AI/ML models) into the unified system architecture.

Essential Technical Skills & Experience
- C++ Engineering: Strong commercial C++ proficiency with proven experience ingesting, debugging, and integrating complex, multi-layered software codebases.
- Systems Engineering Foundations: Solid grasp of the full engineering lifecycle (V-Model), interface definition, and requirements flow-down for complex networked systems.
- Autonomous Systems Architecture: Hands-on experience implementing decision logic, task allocation, or multi-agent collaborative behaviors on airborne, robotic, or complex physical platforms.
- Synthetic Environment Validation: Experience executing Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) testing within virtual simulation environments (e.g., AFSIM, Pitch pRTI, HLA/DIS, or proprietary C++ simulators).
- Real-World Operational Awareness: Practical understanding of real-world operational constraints acting upon autonomous systems (e.g., airspace management, manned-unmanned teaming, rules of engagement).

Desirable Experience
- Familiarity with open UK Defence software reference architectures (e.g., MoD Pyramid architecture, FACE, or STANAG standards).
- Exposure to robotics middleware paradigms (ROS/ROS2, DDS, ZeroMQ, or microservices architectures).
- Python proficiency for data analysis, log processing, and test automation.
