Systems Engineer (Hybrid) – Navigation & Control Systems

Specialising in inertial sensing and integrated navigation technology, we develop cutting-edge stabilisation, flight control, and navigation systems for both air and surface applications.
Based at our Plymouth site, this hybrid role sees you contribute to designing and manufacturing embedded systems for military and civil aircraft applications. Key projects include MEMS-based Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) and the TERPROM® Digital Terrain Reference Navigation System.

What You Will Do
As a Systems Engineer, you’ll drive the development, integration, and validation of complex embedded systems, balancing hardware, software, and mechanical domains from concept to delivery.
Key responsibilities include:

Stakeholder Collaboration:
- Work directly with customers and key stakeholders to define system-level use cases, concepts of operations, and requirements.

Systems Architecture:
- Develop comprehensive system architectures and ensure seamless hardware/software/mechanical interfaces.

Multi-Stakeholder Coordination:
- Bridge Systems, Software, Electrical, and Mechanical engineering teams.
- Define and manage requirement specifications for all system components.

Integration & Testing:
- Lead system integration of real-time embedded systems, including hardware/software validation.
- Maintain requirements-to-test traceability (CCB approvals).

Quality & Compliance:
- Design test cases and procedures aligned with requirements.
- Execute test programmes and apply structured problem-solving.

Project Management:
- Support planning, estimation, and progress reporting.

Requirements
Must Have:
- Proven experience as a Systems Engineer, covering the entire development lifecycle.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills—able to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Requirements analysis & management expertise.
- Proficiency in architectural design and system decomposition techniques.
- Experience creating and executing test plans, including demonstrations (e.g., airworthiness).
- Hands-on experience with requirements management tools (e.g., DOORS, Jama).
- Familiarity with version control systems (SVN, Git, Teamwork Cloud).
Nice to Have:
- Exposure to SysML tools (EA/Cameo or similar).
- Ability to read engineering schematics and interpret design documentation.
- Experience in data analysis (critical for signal/path validation).
- Background in digital signal processing or control systems engineering.
- Experience with sensor-based platforms (e.g., inertial/gyroscopic applications).
- Hands-on experience with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, bus analysers).
- Proficiency in hardware-in-the-loop testing or *MATLAB/Simulink.
