Overview
We are currently recruiting for a Systems Engineer to provide dedicated engineering support within a UK Defence Innovation team.
The role will focus on propulsion systems, sub-system integration and uncrewed aerial systems (UAS), providing technical expertise across requirements development, supplier engagement, technical assessment, assurance and trials, test and evaluation activities.
This is an opportunity to work within a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary defence environment supporting the development of innovative and emerging technologies for operational capability.
Responsibilities
- Develop and refine technical requirements for procurement activity.
- Provide technical input into evaluation criteria, qualification requirements and technical clarification responses.
- Support early market engagement and supplier down-selection.
- Review and assess supplier technical proposals, with particular focus on:
- Propulsion maturity
- System and sub-system integration
- Integration risks
- Suitability for UAS applications
- Support supplier assurance visits, demonstrations and technical reviews.
- Produce technical assessment reports, evaluation evidence and risk/opportunity inputs.
- Support the planning and execution of trials, testing and evaluation activities.
- Define test objectives, technical success criteria and evidence capture approaches.
- Provide technical advice to the wider engineering and defence innovation team.
- Support knowledge transfer through technical reviews, handovers and lessons learned.
- Attend supplier sites, demonstrations and trials-related activities across the UK as required.

Essential skills
- Strong practical understanding of propulsion systems and sub-system integration.
- Understanding of the engineering considerations associated with low-cost or disposable air systems.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work effectively within an agile, fast-paced environment.
- Professionally registered as one of the following, or equivalent:
- Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
- Registered Scientist (RSci)
- Incorporated Marine Engineer (IMarEng)
- Registered Marine Scientist (RMarSci)
- Registered Marine Technologist (RMarTech)
- Advanced Data Science Professional
- Incorporated Radiation Protection Professional (IRadP)
- Advanced Registered IT Technician (Adv RITTech)
- Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP)
Experience
- Experience working with uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) or expendable/disposable air systems.
- Experience assessing propulsion maturity, integration constraints, manufacturing readiness or test evidence.
- Experience in trials, test and evaluation planning, including defining test objectives and success criteria.
- Experience working with suppliers during early-stage development, demonstrations or prototype activity.
- Experience within MOD, DE&S or defence innovation environments.
- Experience supporting technical assurance, supplier reviews or technology demonstrator programmes.
- Proven experience providing technical advice and delivering engineering outcomes within aerospace, propulsion or systems engineering environments.
- Experience providing technical advice and supporting successful engineering delivery.
- Experience with propulsion solutions is essential.

What do I need before I apply
- Clearance: SC Clearance required
- Working: Minimum 1 day per week onsite at Abbey Wood, with UK supplier visits, demonstrations, technical reviews and trials as required
