Power Software & Controls – Systems Engineer

Job (Assignment) Title: Power Software & Controls – Systems Engineer Function/Department: PS&C PL / Power BU Reports To: Power Software & Controls – Project Manager Location: Derry / Londonderry

The Power Software & Controls – Systems Engineer will design, implement, test, and maintain PLC control and SCADA systems across complex global projects. As a key member of the software development team, you’ll collaborate with electrical engineers, developers, and project managers to integrate automation infrastructures for industries such as manufacturing, energy, transportation, and process engineering.


Responsibilities

  • System Design & Integration

    • Develop and integrate PLC programs with SCADA systems for seamless communication and functionality.
    • Prepare PLC control sequence flow charts based on Description of Operation documentation.
    • Build IO (Input/Output) tag and network device databases.
  • PLC Programming & SCADA Configuration

    • Program PLC systems (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or Schneider) using Ladder Logic, Structured Text, and Function Blocks.
    • Design, configure, and deploy scalable, reliable SCADA systems.

  • Stakeholder Collaboration

    • Work closely with clients and internal teams to gather requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
    • Align control systems with application-level software and user needs.
  • Troubleshooting & Maintenance

    • Diagnose and resolve real-time system issues to minimise downtime.
    • Continuously optimise system performance through data analysis and configuration updates.
  • Documentation & Compliance

    • Maintain detailed documentation of PLC/SCADA configurations, logic diagrams, and project updates.
    • Ensure adherence to industry standards and safety regulations.
  • Training & Support

    • Provide technical support and user training on SCADA/PLC systems.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Software/Automation Engineering or a related field.
  • Technical Expertise:
    • Proficiency in PLC programming languages (Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block Diagrams).
    • Experience with SCADA platforms (e.g., Ignition, Wonderware, GE iFIX).
    • Strong knowledge of industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Ethernet/IP, OPC-UA).
  • Project Management: Proven ability to deliver engineering/automation projects.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting abilities.
    • Excellent communication and stakeholder management.
  • Mobility: Willingness to travel internationally for project commissioning and support.
