Systems Engineer - Long-Term Contract

Location: Remote, Manchester, or London
Working Arrangement: Hybrid/Remote with occasional office and project-site visits
Contract Type: Long-Term Contract
Experience: Approximately 1-3 years' experience in Systems Engineering

About the Role

We are seeking a Systems Engineer to support the delivery of systems engineering activities on a major railway infrastructure project.

Working as part of an integrated, multidisciplinary team, you will apply systems engineering principles, processes, and best practice to support the development, integration, assurance, and delivery of complex railway systems and infrastructure.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Systems Engineer looking to develop their experience within a major infrastructure environment, working alongside experienced engineering, technical, and project professionals.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will support the Systems Engineering team across a range of activities, including:

  • Supporting the Systems Engineering Lead in the management and capture of requirements, assumptions, and interfaces within DOORS Next Generation (DOORS NG) across civil and infrastructure, environmental, and rail systems disciplines.
  • Supporting the Requirements Process Lead with requirements technical assurance, including reviewing requirements for quality, completeness, traceability, and compliance with the relevant processes and standards.
  • Attending and contributing to Requirements Working Group meetings.
  • Supporting the Verification and Validation (V&V) Process Lead in coordinating and managing discipline inputs into verification and validation matrices within DOORS NG.
  • Supporting the Enterprise Architecture Modelling Lead through participation in workshops and activities linking requirements to SBS notes within the enterprise architecture model.
  • Working collaboratively with engineers and technical specialists across multiple disciplines to ensure systems engineering activities are effectively coordinated and integrated.
  • Maintaining accurate and auditable systems engineering information and supporting the production of relevant documentation and reports.
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of systems engineering processes, tools, and ways of working across the project.

Skills & Experience

We are looking for someone with:

  • Approximately 1-3 years' experience in Systems Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • An understanding of systems engineering principles and lifecycle processes.
  • Experience or knowledge of requirements management, requirements capture, and traceability.
  • An understanding of verification and validation processes.
  • Experience using IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS Next (DOORS NG) would be highly desirable.
  • An understanding of systems interfaces and multidisciplinary engineering environments.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate, structured, and traceable engineering information.
  • Good communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with stakeholders across different engineering disciplines.
  • The ability to work independently while also contributing effectively within an integrated project team.
  • Experience within the railway, transport, infrastructure, or other complex engineering sectors would be advantageous.

Desirable

  • Experience working on major infrastructure or complex engineering projects.
  • Familiarity with enterprise architecture modelling and systems modelling approaches.
  • Knowledge of SBS (System Breakdown Structure) and requirements traceability.
  • Experience working within a structured systems engineering framework.
  • Relevant engineering or systems engineering qualification.

Location & Working Arrangements

The role can be performed remotely, or from project/office locations in Manchester or London.

The successful candidate will be expected to attend office and/or project-site meetings occasionally, as required by the project and wider team.

Contract

This is a long-term contract opportunity supporting a major railway infrastructure programme. The role offers the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary systems engineering team and gain valuable experience on a complex, high-profile infrastructure project.
