About The Role
Elsevier is looking for a Systems Engineer I to join our TIO team. In this role, you'll help ensure the reliability, scalability, and performance of the systems that power Elsevier's products, working closely with software engineers, platform teams, and other systems engineers. This is an entry-to-mid-level position, ideal for engineers early in their career who want to grow their skills in cloud infrastructure, automation, and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
- Monitor, maintain, and improve the reliability, availability, and performance of production systems running on AWS
- Respond to incidents and help drive root cause analysis and postmortems
- Build and maintain automation for deployment, monitoring, and infrastructure management (Infrastructure as Code)
- Collaborate with development teams to improve system observability (logging, metrics, tracing, alerting)
- Contribute to capacity planning, performance tuning, and cost optimization efforts
- Write and maintain runbooks, documentation, and operational procedures
- Support CI/CD pipelines and help improve deployment safety and velocity

Requirements
- 1–3 years of experience in a Systems Engineering, DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, or similar role
- Hands-on experience with AWS services (e.g., EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, CloudWatch, IAM)
- Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar)
- Working knowledge of containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Scripting/programming experience in one or more languages (Python, Go, Bash, etc.)
- Understanding of monitoring/observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, CloudWatch)
- Familiarity with CI/CD tools and practices (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, etc.)
- Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible, Chef, Puppet)
- Exposure to SLO/SLI/error budget frameworks

If performed in NLD Amsterdam (Radarweg), the base pay range is €40,400 - €67,400. This job may be subject to a collective labor agreement in the Netherlands. Please consult with the hiring team for further details.
