Systems Engineer within Network Services
As a Systems Engineer within Network Services, you will be responsible for developing and enhancing the tooling, automation, and compliance capabilities that underpin Tesco's global network estate.
The role focuses on improving observability, operational efficiency, and governance of network infrastructure through the deployment and continuous improvement of monitoring platforms, automation solutions, and compliance tooling. Working closely with network engineering, security, and operations teams, you will identify opportunities to automate manual processes, provide meaningful operational insights, and ensure network configurations remain compliant with internal standards and industry-recognised best practices.
This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys combining infrastructure knowledge with software development, automation, and data-driven operational improvements.
Responsibilities
Monitoring, Tooling & Observability
- Own and enhance network monitoring and observability platforms.
- Configure, maintain, and optimise tooling used to monitor network health, performance, and service availability.
- Develop dashboards, reporting solutions, and operational metrics that provide actionable insights.
- Identify monitoring gaps and implement improvements to increase visibility across the network estate.
- Partner with engineering teams to improve service reliability through proactive monitoring.
Automation & Engineering
- Design, develop, and support automation solutions that improve operational efficiency and reduce manual effort.
- Develop scripts and applications using Python and related technologies.
- Use Visual Studio Code and modern development methodologies to build and maintain engineering solutions.
- Integrate platforms through APIs and automation frameworks.
- Explore and utilise AI-assisted engineering capabilities to improve productivity, reporting, and operational insight.
- Create self-service and automated reporting capabilities for engineering and operational teams.
Network Compliance & Governance
- Operate and improve tooling used to assess network configuration compliance.
- Monitor network devices and services against internal standards and industry-recognised security benchmarks.
- Develop automated compliance reporting and compliance validation capabilities.
- Investigate configuration drift and support remediation activities.
- Support audit and governance activities through accurate reporting and evidence collection.

- Drive initiatives that improve service reliability, operational efficiency, and customer experience.
- Identify opportunities to remove manual activities through automation and tooling enhancements.
- Introduce new technologies and engineering approaches where they provide measurable business value.
- Contribute to product roadmaps and tooling strategies.
- Work collaboratively with suppliers and internal stakeholders to improve services and outcomes.
Skills / Experience Required
Monitoring & Tooling
- Experience deploying, managing, and enhancing enterprise monitoring platforms.
- Experience with platforms such as: IP Fabric / SolarWinds / LogicMonitor or similar observability and monitoring technologies.
- Experience creating meaningful dashboards, reporting, and alerting solutions.
Automation & Development
- Strong scripting and automation experience.
- Practical Python development skills.
- Experience using Visual Studio Code or similar development environments.
- Experience integrating systems using APIs.
- Experience improving operational processes through automation.
- Knowledge of version control and software development best practices.
- Experience leveraging AI tooling to accelerate engineering activities and improve operational outcomes.
- Experience with GIT and secure credential storage applications.
Network Compliance
- Experience operating network compliance or governance platforms.
- Understanding of configuration compliance and security best practices.
- Experience with tools such as: Skybox / AlgoSec / Tufin or similar.
- Experience identifying and managing configuration drift or policy violations.
Desirable
- Experience with DDI platforms, particularly BlueCat.
- Understanding of DNS, DHCP, and IP Address Management.
- Experience working within large-scale enterprise networks.
Network Infrastructure Knowledge
- A working understanding of:
- Routing and switching technologies
- OSPF, BGP, and related routing protocols
- Router and switch configuration
- Firewall technologies
- Load balancers
- Proxy solutions
- Remote access technologies
Whilst not the primary focus of the role, this knowledge will enable effective troubleshooting, automation, and compliance management across the network estate.
Aligned to the Tesco Systems Engineering framework, successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to:
- Design and implement automation solutions that minimise errors and improve efficiency across multiple domains.
- Write and maintain custom scripts that reduce manual intervention and improve operational effectiveness.
- Identify and implement improvements that drive operational efficiency and service stability.
- Proactively manage and monitor systems and infrastructure platforms.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend improvements that support Tesco's engineering strategy.
- Deliver high-quality engineering solutions whilst collaborating effectively across multiple technical teams.
