Hie is a technical consultancy that designs, builds, and manages the backend systems our customers depend on.

Our work spans cloud platforms, databases, data engineering, backend software, automation, performance, and reliability. We stay involved, understand how complete systems behave in production, and continuously improve them.

We are early in our journey as a company but not in our careers. Hie is built by people who have designed, delivered, and run systems like these before.

We are looking for someone early in their career who wants to become unusually capable across technology and help shape the company they work for. We are a growing team of experienced people who listen to each other, where good ideas can quickly influence how we work.

The Opportunity

This is not a graduate role. You need at least one year of genuine commercial experience in technology.

You should have a good understanding of the fundamentals and the curiosity to go much deeper. You must also be comfortable getting involved in technical areas you do not yet understand.

Your work could include:

  • Investigating performance, reliability, and cost problems.
  • Improving cloud environments, databases, data platforms, and backend applications.
  • Writing software, integrations, scripts, and automation.
  • Finding weaknesses before they become incidents.
  • Helping design and build internal software that improves how Hie works.
  • Turning what we learn into reusable code, documentation, and automated checks.
  • Managing and continuously improving systems after they go live.
  • Working directly with customers and experienced technical consultants.

You will learn by working with real customer systems, experienced engineers, and modern technology. Looking after what we design and build gives you an understanding that cannot be gained from courses, certifications, or disconnected project work alone.

You will not simply identify technical issues and pass them to someone else. You will learn how to explain what needs to change, why it matters, and what options are available. That could mean the quickest safe improvement, the proper long-term solution, or a sensible middle ground. You will help customers understand the balance between reliability, cost, effort, and maintainability, then help deliver the agreed change and measure whether it worked.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Much of our current work involves C#, Azure, SQL Server, and dbt, alongside other technologies where they fit the problem. You do not need experience with all of them, but genuine exposure to any is useful. We care more about curiosity and the ability to learn than a particular list of tools.

A Technical Career Built for the Future

Technology roles are changing quickly.

AI can accelerate research, development, and routine work, but it has no real experience and regularly produces convincing rubbish. We use it extensively, but we expect people to understand enough to question its output, test it properly, and recognize when it is wrong or outdated.

We want to develop expert generalists who can follow problems across cloud, software, databases, and data rather than remaining inside one narrow technical boundary.

In a focused, growing team, your contribution is visible. You will have the opportunity to influence our internal software, customer services, and ways of working as Hie grows.

Responsibility, influence, and salary grow with the impact you have, not your age, qualifications, or time served.

Trust and Autonomy

We give people considerable autonomy and trust.

You will be expected to manage your time, meet agreed commitments, and keep the team informed without being closely supervised. You should investigate properly and make a sensible attempt before asking for help, but also recognize when you are blocked or when someone else’s experience will get to a better answer more quickly.

Autonomy does not mean working alone. We plan as a team, share knowledge, and involve each other before complexity, risk, or poor decisions become difficult to undo.

We work together in our Harrogate office for roughly three days each week. Hybrid working gives people flexibility, but being in the same room is important for learning, problem-solving, and building a strong team.

Reliability Without Constant Firefighting

We respect people’s time and invest heavily in preventing incidents rather than repeatedly reacting to them.

Our customers operate around the clock, but out-of-hours involvement is limited to genuine P1 incidents. We run weekly drills so everyone understands how to respond, communicate, gather evidence, and help ensure the same problem does not happen again.

When something serious happens, the team handles it together or makes a proper handover. Nobody should be left carrying a problem because someone else decided their part was finished.

This works both ways. People who support the team will be supported when they need it.

Who Will Do Well Here

This role will suit someone who:

  • Takes a genuine interest in technology.
  • Learns because they are curious, not only when directed.
  • Wants difficult work and meaningful responsibility.
  • Can admit a technical mistake and help put it right.
  • Communicates clearly and works well with customers.
  • Can manage their own time without disappearing from the team.
  • Wants to understand complete systems rather than one product.
  • Is willing to challenge an answer and have their own thinking challenged.
  • Wants to help shape the company, not simply complete assigned tickets.

It will not suit someone looking for a narrow remit, a predictable ticket queue, or somewhere to remain unnoticed.

What You Need

  • At least one year in a substantive commercial technology role.
  • A broad understanding of modern software and infrastructure.
  • Evidence of natural technical curiosity.
  • Clear written and verbal communication.
  • The willingness to work in areas you have not encountered before.
  • The right to work in the UK.
  • You should already live within daily commuting distance of Harrogate. This role is not suitable for anyone who would need to relocate.

We do not provide visa sponsorship.
