System Research Engineer (fixed term contract)
Edinburgh, United Kingdom – On-site
A leading global technology company is expanding its UK research capabilities, developing technologies that will shape the future of data centre infrastructure, cloud computing and AI systems. Its research teams combine fundamental research with practical engineering, giving engineers the opportunity to turn innovative ideas into real-world technologies.
As a System Research Engineer, you will join a specialist systems research team working at the intersection of advanced research and hands-on engineering. This is an excellent opportunity for a First-Class Masters', PhD grad or early-career System Research Engineer to gain industrial research experience while contributing to technically challenging projects with genuine impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Rapidly prototype and validate new systems research ideas in real-world environments.
- Profile and optimise operating systems and large-scale distributed systems to improve performance.
- Experiment with heterogeneous computing environments, including CPU and NPU-based infrastructure.
- Translate research findings and technical innovations into high-quality publications and research outputs.
- Produce clear technical documentation covering research methods, system designs and implementation decisions.
- Present research progress, performance results and technical findings to internal stakeholders.

Required Experience & Skills
Essential:
- Master's w/Distinction in Computer Science
- Strong understanding of one or more of Operating Systems, Distributed Systems, Cloud Computing or Machine Learning Systems.
- Strong programming ability in at least one language, particularly C/C++.
- Comfortable working with research methodologies, experimentation and technical problem-solving.
- Demonstrable ability to investigate technical problems, develop solutions and evaluate performance.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Desirable:
- PhD in Operating Systems, Distributed Systems, Machine Learning Systems or a related field.
- Research publications in systems or machine learning conferences/journals, such as OSDI, NSDI, EuroSys, SoCC, NeurIPS, ICML or ICLR.
- Experience developing, deploying or maintaining large-scale cloud or production systems.
- Experience with performance profiling, optimisation or heterogeneous computing.
- Experience working with CPU, GPU or NPU infrastructure.
