Tax Accountant / Specialist
Type: Hourly Contract

About the Opportunity
This opportunity is for experienced tax professionals to contribute their expertise to an advanced AI research and training project with Mercor. You will translate real-world tax compliance, tax provision, and tax planning experience into structured, high-quality training data designed to help AI systems better understand how professional tax accountants approach complex tax work. The role covers a broad range of tax specialties, including corporate tax, individual tax, partnership and pass-through taxation, state and local tax (SALT), and international and cross-border taxation.
Responsibilities
- Develop realistic tax scenarios based on professional tax compliance, provision, and planning experience.
- Create scenarios involving tax return preparation, including Forms 1040, 1120, 1120-S, and 1065.
- Develop and evaluate tax provision scenarios involving ASC 740.
- Create scenarios involving tax notices, Information Document Requests (IDRs), and tax controversy support.
- Develop realistic tax planning and estimated payment scenarios.
- Review and compare AI-generated tax outputs for technical accuracy, completeness, and defensibility.
- Evaluate whether AI-generated tax positions are appropriately supported by applicable tax rules and professional judgment.
- Identify technical errors, unsupported conclusions, omissions, and weaknesses in AI-generated tax work.
- Provide clear and structured written feedback to improve AI performance on tax-related tasks.
- Apply practical professional judgment when evaluating complex tax scenarios and proposed solutions.
- Collaborate asynchronously with the research team to help develop high-quality tax training and evaluation data.

Required Qualifications
- Professional experience in tax accounting, tax compliance, tax provision, tax planning, or a closely related field.
- CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA) certification is strongly preferred.
- Clear specialization in at least one tax area, such as:
- Corporate Tax
- Individual Tax
- Partnership / Pass-Through Tax
- State and Local Tax (SALT)
- International / Cross-Border Tax
- Experience in public accounting or in-house tax environments.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of applicable tax rules, compliance processes, and professional tax practices.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to evaluate technical tax work and provide clear, defensible feedback.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active CPA or EA credential.
- Significant experience in a specialized tax practice area.
- Experience with corporate tax returns, partnership returns, individual returns, or pass-through taxation.
- Experience with ASC 740 tax provision and financial reporting.
- Experience handling tax notices, IDRs, audits, controversy matters, or regulatory inquiries.
- Experience with tax planning, estimated payments, and tax research.
- Experience working with international or cross-border tax matters.
- Previous experience with AI evaluation, AI training, quality assurance, or structured professional assessments is a plus.

Eligibility
- Experienced tax professionals based in the United States are encouraged to apply.
- Candidates should have professional experience in tax compliance, tax provision, tax planning, or related tax functions.
- A CPA or EA certification is strongly preferred.
- Candidates should have a clearly defined tax specialty.
- Experience in public accounting or in-house tax is applicable.
- A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is preferred.
