THE ROLE
Reporting to the Deputy Director, you will operate in a fast-paced auction environment, supporting the day-to-day management of goods moving under Sotheby’s customs reliefs regimes. This entry-level role is primarily focused on customs operations, with opportunities to contribute to broader tax projects and initiatives.
This is an operational position requiring accuracy, strong attention to detail, good analytical skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. You will be responsible for customs processing, record-keeping, and ensuring compliance throughout the lifecycle of goods admitted into the UK under customs regimes (for example, Temporary Admission). The role involves close collaboration with Sotheby’s commercial and operations teams.
Previous customs experience would be advantageous but is not essential as training will be provided on the job. We are looking for a motivated self-starter who learns quickly, is comfortable working with data, and has strong Excel and analytical skills.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop a career in tax and customs while gaining experience in a high-value, deadline-driven environment.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
