JOB TITLE: TAX ASSISTANT MANAGER / TAX SENIOR

DEPARTMENT: FINANCE

LOCATION : Central London (Regent's Place, NW1) Hybrid – 4 days in office

REPORTING TO : Tax Manager

TYPE OF CONTRACT : Permanent

THE ROLE

A key role within the tax team with responsibility for tax compliance, reporting and forecasting with the opportunity to develop knowledge of indirect taxes. Management of British Land’s relationship with HMRC.

What You’ll Do

Tax Compliance

  • Undertake and manage tax compliance of the Group, including a portfolio of wholly owned and joint venture companies
  • Liaise with JV partners and the Financial Reporting team as necessary as part of the review and approval process
  • Manage the tax payment process, to ensure that all payments due are paid on time
  • Review and manage periodic group cost and interest recharges

Tax Reporting

  • Lead the preparation of year end and half year schedules for financial reporting and use by the external auditors
  • Manage audit process, auditor meeting agendas and provision of information
  • Manage group REIT position

Tax Planning

  • Support the Tax Manager and liaise with Financial Planning & Analysis team on a regular basis to update for the latest forecast position
  • Update and monitor REIT dividend forecast, identifying when action needs to be taken
  • Support the business on new projects and initiatives by providing timely, technically correct and commercially relevant tax advice
  • Manage and support on restructuring initiatives undertaken to achieve commercial goals of company
  • Manage external advisors, seeking input and advice where necessary
  • Input as needed into the Group’s streamlining initiative to eliminate entities where reasonably possible

Transaction support

  • Input to tax aspects of deals including tax data room input, tax due diligence process and tax review of legal documentation
  • Support the Tax Team on M&A activity

Other

  • Be the key internal controls owner, leading the Tax Team Risk Management process by updating the risk table, operating and checking that controls are working effectively and considering mitigants for new risks identified
  • Educate the wider business on topical tax matters and internal processes and controls
  • Own and manage the annual PSA submission to HMRC

About You

  • Qualified Accountant (ICAEW or equivalent) and/or Chartered Tax Adviser with strong analytical skills
  • Good knowledge of UK corporate tax matters in the context of a large group environment
  • Experience of real estate taxation issues would be advantageous but is not essential
  • Experience of managing a large portfolio of UK tax compliance
  • Ability to manage a portfolio of responsibilities, prioritise and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to produce well thought through, clearly set out and expressed schedules and papers with appropriate attention to detail
  • Ability to understand complex issues while condensing and communicating such areas into simple and understandable messages for non-tax professionals
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with evidence of successfully applying creative solutions
  • Alphatax knowledge is desirable but not essential and familiarity with Finance Systems would be an advantage
