Branch Directors are supported by function teams (including Finance) based in Hull (‘Central Support’). MKM has an entrepreneurial Private Equity heritage. Since 2017 we have been backed by Bain Capital, during which time the business has more than doubled in size.

Role

This role is responsible for supporting the effective management of MKM’s tax reporting, compliance and control framework in a large business environment. It will be an influential role within a collaborative and dynamic finance team within Central Support, based in Hull, providing significant exposure to a wide range of finance processes.

Working closely with the Head of Financial Accounting, Tax and Treasury, external advisers and stakeholders across the business, the role will ensure accurate and timely tax submissions, robust compliance processes, effective management of tax risks, and practical support to branches in a fast-paced, growing organisation.

Key Responsibilities

Tax Reporting

  • Ownership of all areas of tax reporting and compliance ensuring on time and in full returns and remittance of all relevant taxes, supported by the Head of Tax and external advisors:
    • VAT reporting and control, including registration, returns, reconciliations and related compliance processes.
    • Corporation tax, including tax computations, capital allowances and group loss relief.
    • Customs and duty compliance and review (i.e. for imported stock) (including post clearance documentation compliance checks).
    • Transfer pricing, including documentation, CBCR and Pillar 2 reporting requirements where applicable.
    • Manage green and environmental tax reporting, including Plastic Packaging Tax and other relevant environmental obligations.
    • PAYE Settlement Agreement (PSA) and Employee Related Security (ERS) reporting, ensuring accurate data capture and timely submission. Supporting payroll team on other areas of employment taxation as required.
    • Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) registration and returns, including DRC where relevant.
    • Other ad hoc tax compliance and reporting (e.g. exports, withholding taxes, property-related taxes).

Compliance

  • Maintain a compliance calendar, ensuring key deadlines, and payments are understood and managed.
  • Manage queries (e.g. from Branch Directors) ensuring these are resolved / escalated where required. Using external advise where appropriate and ensuring Branch Directors receive exceptional levels support.
  • Coordinate ONS and other statutory information requests, ensuring accurate and timely responses.
  • Support tax risk management through effective operation, review and documentation of tax controls.
  • Work closely with the Governance team to maintain an up-to-date tax risk register.
  • Support HMRC contacts and inquiries as part of the Large Business group, SAO requirements and external financial audit (PwC) requests.

Other

  • Maintain relevant balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring robust review, control and evidence.
  • Own forecasting of tax balances (P/L, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow).
  • Support wider Finance projects, including process improvement, system enhancement and effective use of technology (including Robotics / AI).
  • Support the ESG team with provision of data for environmental reporting as required.
  • Additionally, as required, there will be opportunity to support finance priorities across the finance team (e.g. statutory account preparation or supporting finance close).
  • Deliver practical tax training and guidance in response to business need and regulatory changes.
  • Contribute actively to the wider Central Support Finance team, sharing knowledge openly and supporting team development and in particular the Finance Academy Associates.

Essential Skills/Experience

  • Experience in working in a large business with multiple and complex tax reporting requirements.
  • Superior Excel skills and familiarity with managing reporting and compliance through ERP systems (MKM uses Kerridge).
  • Formal accounting or tax qualification (or working towards) is preferred.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisation skills.
  • Hands-on, proactive approach with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, growth-focused environment
  • Curious mindset with a drive to understand the business and continuously improve how information is produced and used
  • Ability to build relationships, secure buy-in and work effectively with stakeholders across Central functions and branches
  • Adaptable and resilient, able to balance technical rigour with pragmatism to deliver accurate, timely outputs
  • Excellent communication skills and experience in communicating complex matters to non-finance stakeholders.

Desirable Skills/Experience

  • Qualification in Accounting or Tax is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience in wholesale, retail, or construction-related sectors
  • Experience of supporting large, high volume multiple branch organisations
  • Experience of Kerridge K8 or similar ERP system
