Build a career where technical challenge, trusted relationships and continuous learning come together.
Our Tax graduate programme is designed for curious, outgoing people who enjoy getting to grips with complex technical matters and working with clients to achieve the best possible outcomes. As legislation and client circumstances evolve, you will keep learning, apply sound judgement and turn detailed information into clear, practical support.
At Mercer & Hole, you will join a people-first organisation where trainees are known, supported and encouraged to contribute. You will work closely with experienced colleagues and have genuine access to senior managers and partners, giving you insight into both client work and the wider firm from the start.
What You’ll Do
You will work within our Private Client team, while studying towards the ATT & CTA qualifications. With funded study, college time and structured support, you will connect your technical learning directly to personal tax work for a varied portfolio of private clients.
You will:
- Prepare personal tax returns
- Review financial information
- Help clients understand their obligations
- Investigate information
- Solve problems
- Communicate with HMRC and clients
As you develop, you will support more complex work and deliver clear, practical advice. Over time, you will take greater ownership of work and build trusted private client relationships.
How You’ll Progress
Year 1 — Build strong foundations
From the outset, you will apply your problem-solving skills by preparing basic accounts and personal tax returns. With support from the team, you will review client information, investigate gaps, liaise with HMRC and draft clear client communications.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
