Tax Investigations Manager
London | £60,000 - £70,000 + benefits | Hybrid working
A specialist boutique Tax Investigations firm, founded and run by experienced ex-HMRC professionals, is looking to appoint a Tax Investigations Manager to join its growing team.
This is an opportunity to join a business that genuinely specialises in HMRC enquiries and investigations, rather than offering tax investigations as one part of a wider tax service.
The firm has built its reputation around handling complex and sensitive HMRC matters, with particular expertise across COP8 and COP9 investigations.
The Role
You will take responsibility for managing a portfolio of complex HMRC investigations, working closely with clients throughout the enquiry process and helping to achieve the best possible outcomes.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Managing complex HMRC enquiries and tax investigations.
- Handling COP8 and COP9 cases from inception through to resolution - essential.
- Advising individuals and businesses on contentious and high-risk tax matters.
- Managing correspondence and negotiations with HMRC.
- Handling voluntary disclosures and settlement discussions.
- Taking ownership of client relationships and case strategy.
- Working closely with senior members of the team on particularly complex investigations.
- Supporting the development of junior team members.
- Contributing to the continued growth and development of the practice.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
