Tax Investigations Manager

London | £60,000-£70,000 | Top 40 Accountancy Firm | Hybrid

A Top 40 accountancy firm is continuing to grow its specialist Tax Investigations & Disputes team and is looking for an experienced Tax Investigations Manager to join its London practice.

This is an opportunity to work on complex, technically challenging investigations and disputes while playing an active role in the continued growth of the team.

The Role

You'll manage a varied portfolio of HMRC investigations and tax disputes, taking responsibility for cases from initial enquiry through to resolution.

Your work will include:

  • Managing complex HMRC enquiries and investigations
  • Leading COP8 and COP9 investigations
  • Handling Worldwide Disclosure Facility (WDF) cases
  • Advising on voluntary and prompted disclosures
  • Dealing with HMRC's information-gathering powers and information notices
  • Investigating undisclosed income, assets and arrangements
  • Advising clients throughout contentious HMRC enquiries
  • Challenging HMRC's technical positions and proposed adjustments
  • Negotiating settlements with HMRC
  • Advising on penalties, behaviour and mitigation
  • Managing disputes arising from HMRC enquiries
  • Preparing cases for potential Tax Tribunal proceedings
  • Supporting contentious matters through to resolution
  • Working closely with Partners on particularly complex and high-value cases

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone with strong specialist experience across Tax Investigations and/or Tax Disputes.

You'll ideally have:

  • Strong experience managing HMRC investigations
  • Proven COP8 and COP9 experience
  • Experience handling complex investigations independently
  • Strong knowledge of HMRC enquiry and investigation procedures
  • Experience negotiating settlements with HMRC
  • Experience with disclosures and contentious tax matters
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Confidence dealing directly with HMRC and senior clients
  • Experience mentoring or managing junior colleagues
  • An interest in developing client relationships and winning work
  • Ex-HMRC experience would be highly advantageous.
