About the role

This role sits within Tax & Legal, in the Private Client tax practice. The Tax Investigations team supports clients with tax enquiries, disclosures and disputes, bringing together technical tax knowledge, clear analysis and practical case management.

As a Manager, you will lead and support complex HM Revenue & Customs matters across a varied client portfolio. You will work with senior colleagues, junior team members and specialists, including the tax litigation team, to deliver clear, well-supported advice and progress cases effectively. You will also build trusted client relationships, share specialist knowledge across the wider Private Client business and contribute to the team’s growth.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Lead and support complex HM Revenue & Customs enquiries and disclosures, including Code of Practice 8 and Code of Practice 9 matters, while maintaining effective relationships with clients and HM Revenue & Customs.
  • Prepare high-quality investigation and disclosure reports, including relevant tax computations, and coordinate contributions from junior colleagues.
  • Plan internal case reviews and meetings with HM Revenue & Customs, track agreed actions and help move cases towards resolution.
  • Apply the statutory tax administration framework, HM Revenue & Customs guidance and the Litigation and Settlement Strategy to client matters.
  • Provide specialist input to the wider Private Client practice on enquiry and disclosure matters, including discovery assessments, information requests and penalties.
  • Build strong working relationships with clients and colleagues across KPMG, including tax litigation specialists.
  • Support business development through presentations, networking activity and the sharing of relevant market and technical insight.
  • Manage the financial aspects of assignments, including work in progress and billing controls, while maintaining current specialist knowledge.

Experience and skills needed

  • Demonstrable experience of tax disputes, HM Revenue & Customs enquiries and voluntary disclosures across a range of client situations.
  • Experience managing complex or multi-stream tax enquiry cases, including matters handled by Fraud Investigation Service or Wealthy and Mid-sized Business Compliance teams.
  • Strong knowledge of tax administration, enquiry procedures, discovery assessments, information requests, penalties and relevant HM Revenue & Customs guidance.
  • Ability to analyse detailed information, prepare accurate tax computations and draft clear, evidence-based reports for clients and HM Revenue & Customs.
  • Experience building effective relationships with clients, tax authorities and multidisciplinary colleagues, with clear written and verbal communication.
  • Commercial awareness and experience managing case delivery, delegation, work in progress and billing, together with confidence using Microsoft Office.

Qualifications required

  • A Chartered Tax Adviser, Associate Chartered Accountant, Association of Chartered Certified Accountants or equivalent overseas qualification; alternatively, relevant professional experience and internal tax qualifications gained within HM Revenue & Customs.
