Your new company
An established independent accountancy practice based in Runcorn is seeking an experienced Tax professional to join the firm in a key client-facing role. This opportunity would suit a tax professional who enjoys variety, responsibility, and close client interaction, and who has previous experience of a manager or senior manager role. This role would suit a Tax professional who appreciates the culture of a smaller firm, enjoys building long-term client relationships and is looking for a stable, varied and rewarding position.
Your new role
The role will involve managing a portfolio, with a clear emphasis on personal tax. Responsibilities will include overseeing personal tax compliance, along with a good level of advisory work for owner-managed businesses. The advisory and compliance split is well balanced, with exposure to personal tax planning, IHT and CGT planning and ad-hoc advisory projects. An extensive knowledge of IHT and CGT is therefore required. Experience of estate work would also be an advantage. The role includes dealing with HMRC enquiries and compliance checks and the preparation and submission to HMRC of one-off disclosures. There is also involvement with trusts and residency matters, primarily dealing with client queries and a modest volume of trust tax returns. You will manage and maintain strong client relationships, acting as a trusted adviser and point of contact. The role includes regular client engagement and liaison with professional contacts.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
