I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

As a Semi-Senior, you will have hopefully completed your ATT qualification (or be close to qualifying) and your focus should have turned to commencing your CTA qualification. Ideally, you’d have at least two years’ experience with an accountancy practice already. You’ll join a friendly, supportive business which offers its employees excellent progression opportunities. Reporting into a relevant team member, you will be able to continue studying for your professional qualifications whilst gaining on the job experience as you work within a team to service clients such as individuals, companies, trusts, estates, and more.
We provide both technical/hard and ‘soft’ skills training through platforms such as Tolley’s, Mercia, Croner-i and LinkedIn Learning. We also provide ongoing training to develop your ‘soft’ skills. You'll gain hands-on client experience, so in your first years especially, we'll equip you with training on essential skills like making a positive first impression, mastering effective time management techniques, and enhancing your communication skills.
