If so, the Shetland Islands Council is offering an exciting opportunity to work at excellently resourced Mid Yell Junior High School and Cullivoe Primary School.

Our beautiful location offers great opportunities for learning and we benefit from an excellently resourced school, at the heart of a caring, supportive community.

Mid Yell Junior High School

Mid Yell Junior High School is a non-denominational school located in Mid Yell, Yell. It provides nursery, primary and secondary education, up to S4, for children from Central, Mid and East Yell for Primary and the whole island of Yell for Secondary. The structure of the school is:

  • 1 nursery class
  • 2 composite primary classes
  • A class for each of the S1-4 years

There is currently a total of 75 pupils on the roll. The school is managed by a Head Teacher and 1 Depute Head Teacher. The current staffing complement is 16 teachers assisted by support staff as required to meet school demands. The current Head Teacher is Mr Mark Lawson. Cullivoe Primary School

Cullivoe Primary School is a non-denominational school located in Cullivoe, Yell. It provides primary education to P7 for children from North Yell. The structure of the school is one primary class. There is currently a total of 11 pupils on the roll. The school is managed by a Head Teacher. The current staffing complement is one part-time teacher supporting the Head Teacher assisted by support staff as required to meet school demands. The current Head Teacher is Mrs Claire Lawson.

Candidate Requirements

Candidates should detail in their application whether they currently hold registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). If not, candidates should detail in their application whether they have sought confirmation that they will be able to be registered with the GTCS.

Additional Information

  • The grade of this post is TCHR
  • Rate of pay shown in the advert is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £1.8219 per hour
  • Temporary Full Time post for 35 hours per week until 11/02/2027, then reducing to 28 hours per week for the remainder of the contract
  • Temporary contract until 15/08/2027
  • Preferred candidates will be required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update prior to a formal offer of employment being made
  • You must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) prior to starting in post
  • We would welcome applications from flexible route probationers
  • A relocation package does not apply to this post
  • We will pay interview expenses from within Shetland
  • We are happy to talk flexible working
  • FTE of Post - 1.0, then 0.8 from 12/02/2027
  • Class Information - Cullivoe Primary (2 days), teaching composite class P1 - P7 (Aged 5 - 12). Mid Yell JHS (3 days), teaching composite class, P1 - P4 (Aged 5 - 8). Post holder will then work 2 days in each school from 12/02/2027
  • Sector/Subject Specialism - Primary
  • Qualification Requirement - Primary teaching qualification and GTCS registration
