SEN Teaching Assistant: Lower KS2: ASD / SLD

Job Type: Full-time, long-term

Location: Feltham

Phase: Lower KS2

Start Date: ASAP

Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

Are you a confident SEN Teaching Assistant with experience supporting pupils with ASD, SLD and challenging behaviour?

A specialist school is seeking an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to join a Lower KS2 class supporting pupils with complex learning, communication and behavioural needs.

This is a role for someone who understands specialist education and is able to remain calm, consistent and assertive when supporting pupils who may display challenging or distressed behaviour.

The Class

You will work within a Lower KS2 ASD/SLD class, supporting pupils who require a high level of structure, consistency and individualised support.

The successful SEN Teaching Assistant will work alongside the class teacher and wider team to help pupils access learning, communicate effectively, regulate their emotions and develop greater independence.

Some pupils may display challenging behaviour, so previous experience in this area is highly desirable.

Your Responsibilities

As a SEN Teaching Assistant, You Will

  • Support pupils with Autism (ASD) and Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)
  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support
  • Support pupils displaying challenging behaviour
  • Follow individual behaviour and support strategies
  • Promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation
  • Help pupils access classroom learning and activities
  • Support communication and social development
  • Assist with transitions and changes to routine
  • Establish clear and consistent boundaries
  • Work closely with teachers and other professionals
  • Support pupils during break and lunch periods
  • Provide personal care where required
  • Support toileting, nappy changing and feeding
  • Maintain a calm, safe and structured classroom environment

Essential Experience

ASD/SLD Experience Is Essential.

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate previous experience working with children or young people with complex SEN.

Experience of challenging behaviour is highly relevant, including experience within:

  • Specialist SEN schools
  • Autism provisions
  • Primary schools
  • Residential care
  • Children's support services
  • Behaviour support
  • Social care
  • Youth work
  • Specialist educational settings

Personal care is an important part of the role. Applicants must be comfortable supporting pupils with toileting, nappy changing, feeding and other personal-care requirements where necessary.
