Perrott Hill Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship
Perrott Hill is an independent day and boarding prep school near Crewkerne. We are looking for a warm and enthusiastic apprentice Teaching Assistant to join our small, experienced team in Pre-Prep who will work alongside qualified and experienced teachers every day while training with Side by Side.
Wage
- £16,640 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age
- National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices
- Minimum wage rates (opens in new tab)
- £320.00 per week at £8.00 per hour, the apprentice minimum wage from April 2026. Age-related rate after year one for those aged 19+.
Training Course
- Teaching assistant (level 3)
Hours
- Term time only (34 weeks) plus INSET days: Monday - Friday, 8.00am - 4.30pm with a 30-minute lunch break (40 hours per week). This includes one day per week (or the equivalent) of off-the-job training and study with Side by Side.

What You'll Do at Work
Teaching Assistant (Pre-Prep), directed by the Head of Pre-Prep and class teachers:
- Support learning in class, in small groups and one to one, including reading, phonics, handwriting and maths
- Prepare resources and displays; support assessment, record-keeping, pastoral care and behaviour
- Supervise break, lunch and after-school care, assist with Forest School, PE and Games, swimming and trips
- Follow safeguarding, health and safety and confidentiality requirements at all times

What You'll Learn
- Apply strategies to support and encourage the development of independent learners.
- Adapt communication strategies for the audience and context.
- Apply behaviour management strategies in line with organisational policy.
- Adapt resources to support all learners.
- Communicate with teachers to ensure clarity of the TA’s role.
- Apply teaching strategies to deliver learning activities or interventions.
- Build relationships with learners, teachers, other professionals and stakeholders.
- Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
- Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
- Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
- Apply methods of formative assessment.
- Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
- Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
- Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
- Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
- Provide feedback to learners.
Training Schedule
- A Level 2 Teaching Assistant or early years qualification, or relevant A levels, is welcome but not essential.
The off-the-job training will take place either online or at the Side by Side Training Centre in Dorchester each week on a Wednesday or Thursday during term time.

Desirable Qualifications
- GCSE in:
- English (grade 4)
- Maths (grade 4)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other Requirements
Successful applicants must be able to obtain an enhanced DBS check with barred-list information, provide satisfactory references and complete all pre-appointment safer recruitment checks.

On successful completion, apprentices will hold the Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification. Teaching Assistant apprentices have progression routes into Higher Level Teaching Assistant work, learning support or teacher training. There may be the opportunity of a permanent post at Perrott Hill, subject to vacancies and performance.
