Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Supporting the teacher in the general management of the classroom
- Undertaking activities, as directed by the teacher, with individuals or small groups of pupils
- Providing clerical/admin support, e.g. photocopying, typing, filing, collection of money, administering coursework and exams
- Supervising groups of pupils alone and participating in general activities, including giving sensitive support and intervention in children's play
- Undertaking routine invigilation and marking
- Being responsible for the organisation, classroom maintenance, setting out, clearing away and care of resources to create a purposeful and attractive learning environment
- Assisting in the preparation, maintenance and repair of books, apparatus and equipment, including cataloguing and stocktaking of resources
- Preparing pupils' work for display in the classroom and around the school
- Demonstrating creativity in assisting with the practical resourcing of the classroom.
- Working with pupils directly on curriculum-related tasks under the direction of the teacher
- Assisting in the delivery of support to pupils, including assessment, recording and reporting procedures, and maintenance of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) under the guidance of a designated teacher
- Providing feedback to the teacher regarding the social, emotional and physical needs of pupils and assisting with monitoring and evaluating the learning environment
- Following school policy documents and schemes of work to remain up to date with school and National Curriculum documentation
- Under the teacher's overall direction, sharing responsibility for creating a safe environment for pupils within and outside the classroom
- Assisting with the supervision of pupils, particularly during break periods and at the beginning and end of sessions
- Providing general care and welfare by responding appropriately to the social, emotional and physical needs of pupils, which may include attending to sick or injured pupils and investigating reasons for absence
- Administering medication to pupils, where agreed, in accordance with school policy
- Promoting and implementing the Council's Equality Policy in all aspects of employment and service delivery
- Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people for whom the postholder is responsible or comes into contact with

We are a large primary school based on 2 sites in the east end of Newcastle. The school is part of NEAT Academy Trust (NEAT). There is a link to the NEAT website on the menu above. The school was awarded teaching school status in July 2017 and a Research School in 2019. In this role, we work with a number of schools to share good practice and research-based CPD to develop the expertise and skills of teachers across the city. Our school motto is ‘Together we make a difference’.
Our staff are dedicated to working with children, parents and families to ensure that all Walkergate children achieve their very best in everything they do in a safe, happy and nurturing environment.
Staff regularly go the extra mile to support our children and families. In our recent inspection, children told the OFSTED team ‘that staff are always ‘looking after [them] and looking out for [them]’ The school is popular in the local area, and we are lucky to have generations of families coming through school which helps to create the real sense of community which we have.
We are a restorative practice school which underpins our behaviour management, encouraging all children to take responsibility for their learning and behaviour.
All adults in school have high expectations of our children in both their behaviour and learning.
We have 3 core values which we promote and celebrate. They are: Aspire, Belong and Care. In our most recent OFSTED we were graded as a good school. OFSTED reported, “Pupils’ behaviour and attitudes are very positive in lessons”. Visitors to our school always comment on the calm atmosphere and how polite and friendly our children are.
