About the Role
Woodfield School, Hemel Hempstead, seeks an apprentice teaching assistant to support pupils aged 3–19 with severe learning difficulties. Training provided; caring, flexible team player essential.
Wage
- £11,232 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age (National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices)
Training
- Course: Teaching assistant (level 3)
- Hours: Monday - Friday, Shifts to be confirmed. 27 hours a week
- Start date: Thursday 10 December 2026
- Duration: 1 year 6 months
- Positions available: 1
What You'll Do
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
Work Schedule
- Monthly cohort sessions: Hosted on Microsoft Teams for approximately 2-hours per session. These sessions can be recorded as off-the-job training.
- One-on-one meetings: With tutors every 4-6 weeks to discuss learning, assess progress, and establish SMART targets.
- Study time: 3 hours per week, recorded as off-the-job training.
- Off-the-job training: 417 hours throughout the apprenticeship.
Mentor Role
- The learners’ mentor, or a qualified Teacher, carries out observations on the learners’ practical work.
- Observation template will be provided.
- Tutors are always available to advise.

What You'll Learn
- Apply strategies to support and encourage the development of independent learners.
- Adapt communication strategies for the audience and context.
- Apply behaviour management strategies in line with organisational policy.
- Adapt resources to support all learners.
- Communicate with teachers to ensure clarity of the TA’s role.
- Apply teaching strategies to deliver learning activities or interventions.
- Build relationships with learners, teachers, other professionals, and stakeholders.
- Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding, and health & safety.
- Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
- Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
- Apply methods of formative assessment.
- Use up-to-date technology safely, to support learning.
- Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
- Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
- Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
- Provide feedback to learners.

Training Schedule
- Delivered through monthly cohort sessions hosted on Microsoft Teams for approximately 2-hours per session.
- Timetable for these sessions can be accessed through the learners' OneFile account.
Desirable Qualifications
- GCSE in English (grade 4)
- Maths (grade 4)
- Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
