Teaching & Research Technician

About The Role

The Synthetic Chemistry Teaching and Research Technician is a key full-time, open-ended position within the Faculty of Science (FoS) teaching support team. Working closely with our Department of Chemistry Technical Manager and academic teaching team, you will be responsible for the logistics and operation of the Synthetic Chemistry teaching lab. The successful candidate will also provide cover for our Physical and Life Sciences Chemistry teaching spaces.

Ensuring undergraduate (UG) teaching sessions are prepared for in advance is key to first-class service provision, as is ensuring the technical team, academic staff, and demonstrators are supported. The successful candidate will organise routine maintenance for the wide range of analytical instruments used in the delivery of our teaching and research activities. They will also have the capacity to produce accurate user information/procedures and be able to demonstrate the practical elements of instrumentation. Effective communication with multiple stakeholders is essential.

About You

Our model candidate will be a chemist, with experience in a technical, teaching, and/or research environment. A proven interest in synthetic or analytical chemistry would be ideal, but we would consider other chemical disciplines for the right candidate.

  • A degree in Chemistry or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of preparing chemical materials.
  • Significant analytic/equipment experience.
  • Experience of planning and coordinating laboratory logistics to tight timescales.
  • A strong understanding of laboratory health and safety and a passion for encouraging others to demonstrate good practice.

Effective time-management, efficiency, and the capacity to multi-task are key to this role. A flexible approach to work and the ability to troubleshoot are also important. Clear communication, diplomacy, and enthusiasm are essential for anyone working as part of our busy team.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
