An opportunity has arisen for an experienced mental health nurse to join the Aneurin Bevan Specialist Drug and Alcohol Service (ABSDAS) as a Team Lead, permanent position. This will be as part of the South team (Newport & Caerphilly area), based in Newport.
ABSDAS is a community-based service that provides treatment for drug and/or alcohol-dependent adults aged 18 and over. We provide an extensive treatment and case management service to people experiencing problems with substance use and associated complexities including mental health, physical health, pregnancy, and child protection issues. The successful candidate will support the Team Manager to provide a leadership role to the team and to work with service users to comprehensively assess their needs and develop an appropriate care plan. This will aim to address their physical and psychological well-being in addition to their substance use.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will undertake leadership duties in the specialist addictions service, providing day-to-day operational management and leadership of the Complex Services Team and Shared Care Services Team and supporting the wider team to provide highly specialised care. Working with service users to comprehensively assess their needs, identify options to meet those needs, and negotiate and review appropriate care within the parameters of the ABSDAS. Working with the wider MDT to deliver evidence-based care, work with stakeholders to promote good working relationships, and improve the care of vulnerable people who use drugs and alcohol.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
