Role Overview
Team Leader, Derby
We’re looking for a Team Leader to join our team in Derby (DE1 9TA) and support the smooth, efficient running of the TMUK operation. This role offers a competitive salary of £41715.21 per annum, based on a rotating Monday–Friday shift pattern of 05:30–14:30 and 15:00–00:00. The successful candidate will also be expected to work flexibly to meet business needs and be willing to work overtime when required.
This is a varied, hands-on role involving safe MHE use, loading and unloading vehicles, and operating a forklift truck in line with all Health & Safety standards. You’ll also support key people and operational activities, including disciplinary and grievance investigations, trailer movements, holiday and appraisal coordination, team training, and building strong relationships with customers and Yusen stakeholders.
You’ll additionally supervise a fast-paced shunting operation and oversee loading bay activities, ensuring all work is completed safely, accurately and on schedule.
Key Responsibilities
Business Operations
- To oversee the requirements of the client to ensure parts are delivered to required locations to meet business demands
- Effectively allocate team activities for your area of responsibility, ensuring tasks are distributed appropriately and are achievable
- Provide data to your Line Manager to support KPI’s population/creation, supporting proactive action to ensure continuous improvement
- Map, challenge and continually review current processes alongside your Group Leader to ensure that SOP’s are robust, efficient, current and comply with Health & Safety
- Effectively compile and deliver a structured and comprehensive shift handover enabling a smooth transition between the shifts to ensure operations continue smoothly and all outstanding actions are addressed
- Appropriately escalating issues arising during the shift at the earliest opportunity to ensure efficient running of the operation
- Measure productivity and report data to Group Leader highlighting any concerns

Health & Safety
- Deliver the ongoing Yusen H&S programme through daily monitoring, application and delivery of the H&S policy and external compliance
- Participating in H&S monitoring, reviewing processes and ensuring employees are trained. Communication of H&S matters to the team
- Manage workplace safety continuously
Workforce Planning
- Motivate, coach and mentor the team, ensuring expected performance levels are understood
- Identifying and working alongside your line manager in implementing appropriate training interventions to build a multi-skilled workforce able to operate in the most cost-effective manner
- Follow all required employee management processes in regard to performance, absence and conduct/undertake disciplinary investigations and hearings in accordance with policies and procedures
What You Will Bring to the Role
- Experience in a similar role essential
- Ability to manage and motivate a team within a busy environment
- A good understanding of disciplinary and grievance procedures
- FLT Counterbalance Licence essential
- Ability to withstand pressure and work to tight deadlines
- Good attention to detail and organisational skills
- Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written
- Excellent IT skills including Microsoft packages and e-mail
- Ability to prioritise workload, effectively managing multiple tasks
