About Tembo
At Tembo, we’re building the UK’s leading consumer mortgage platform, helping people buy their first home, remortgage, and move up the property ladder.
Home ownership has become increasingly difficult for many people. Through innovative mortgage products, affordability schemes, and savings tools such as our Lifetime ISA and Cash ISA, Tembo helps families who might otherwise be locked out of home ownership.
Our platform supports the entire journey, from mortgage discovery through to application submission, alongside savings products that help people build towards buying a home.
We’re rated 4.8★ on Trustpilot, with thousands of customers whose lives have been changed by getting onto the property ladder.
Our biggest challenge this year is scale.
We aim to double the number of mortgage cases we submit without doubling the size of our operations team. Achieving that requires us to automate large parts of the mortgage journey through operational tooling, workflow automation, AI, and integrations with lenders and financial partners.
The Role
We’re looking for a highly hands-on Tech Lead to take significant ownership of the systems that power Tembo’s mortgage and savings platform.
This is primarily an individual contributor role. You’ll spend the vast majority of your time designing systems, writing production code, and shipping software. The remainder will be spent helping the engineering team make good technical decisions, shepherding the codebase, and ensuring our architecture continues to support the company as it grows.
You’ll work extremely closely with our CTO, CPO and Senior Product Manager to shape what we build, how we build it, and how we sequence the work. Together, you’ll turn business and customer problems into clear technical plans and help ensure the team delivers them successfully.
You will have substantial responsibility for the technical execution of our roadmap. That means owning important systems yourself while also providing the context, direction, and technical leadership that helps the wider team move quickly and confidently.
This is not a people-management role. It is a role for an experienced engineer who wants to remain deeply involved in the code while having a major influence on technical direction, engineering quality, and delivery.
What Engineers at Tembo Build
Examples of systems our engineers work on include:
- AI-assisted Mortgage workflow automation that moves cases through lender processes with minimal manual intervention
- Operational tooling used by Tembo’s case management teams
- Integrations with lenders, credit agencies, and financial partners
- Savings infrastructure powering products such as our Cash ISA and Lifetime ISA
- Automation systems that remove operational bottlenecks throughout the mortgage journey
These systems are central to enabling Tembo to scale while maintaining a high-quality customer experience.
Examples of Problems We’re Working On
- Building an automated mortgage workflow using AI
- Increasing mortgage case throughput through workflow automation
- Designing internal platforms used by operations teams managing large numbers of cases
- Building reliable integrations with lenders and financial institutions
- Scaling Tembo’s mortgage platform as customer demand grows
- Ensuring correctness and auditability in savings products handling real customer funds
- Improving observability and reliability across the platform
- Evolving our architecture without slowing down product delivery

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What You’ll Do
- Build and ship critical systems
- Design, implement, and operate the backend services that power Tembo’s mortgage and savings platform. You’ll be expected to contribute production code throughout the week and personally own some of our most important technical work.
- Take ownership of the codebase
- Help maintain the overall health, structure, and direction of the codebase. Identify areas that need improvement, make pragmatic decisions about technical debt, and ensure the platform remains easy to change as the company grows.
- Lead technical execution
- Work closely with the CTO and Senior Product Manager to turn product priorities into clear technical approaches. Help break complex initiatives into deliverable pieces, identify risks early, and ensure the team has the context needed to execute effectively. Provide pragmatic estimates, surface uncertainty and dependencies early, and help sequence work into achievable milestones.
- Own systems end-to-end
- Take responsibility for systems from initial design through to production operation, including data modelling, implementation, deployment, monitoring, reliability, performance, and ongoing evolution.
- Shape the architecture
- Lead architecture discussions and make pragmatic decisions that balance speed, simplicity, reliability, and long-term maintainability. You’ll help establish patterns that allow the engineering team to move quickly without creating unnecessary complexity.
- Automate operational workflows
- Work closely with product and operations teams to understand manual processes and build systems that improve efficiency, accuracy, and customer outcomes.
- Support and unblock the team
- Provide technical guidance through pairing, design reviews, and code reviews. Help engineers navigate difficult decisions and raise the quality of the team’s work without becoming a bottleneck.
- Raise the engineering bar
- Improve our development practices, observability, testing, documentation, and approach to operating production systems.
What Success Looks Like
Within your first 6–12 months, you will likely have:
- Designed, built, and launched systems that materially increase mortgage case throughput
- Delivered automation that removes manual steps from the mortgage workflow
- Taken ownership of key parts of the mortgage or savings platform
- Shaped the technical approach to major product initiatives alongside the CTO and Senior Product Manager
- Improved the structure, reliability, and observability of critical platform services
- Helped the engineering team make better architectural and implementation decisions
- Established a strong understanding of the codebase and become a trusted technical partner across engineering, product, and operations
- Increased the team’s ability to deliver complex work predictably and with confidence
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for an experienced engineer who enjoys building systems, taking ownership, and helping a team execute at a high level.
You likely have:
- Significant experience building and operating production backend systems
- Experience leading the technical delivery of complex projects while remaining deeply hands-on
- A track record of designing and owning production systems end-to-end
- Strong experience with Ruby on Rails or a similar backend framework
- Experience working with transactional, financial, or operationally critical systems
- Strong knowledge of data modelling, system design, and distributed system fundamentals
- Experience operating services in production, including monitoring, incident response, performance, and reliability
- The ability to turn ambiguous business problems into clear technical plans
- Strong judgement about when to invest in architecture and when to choose a simpler approach
- The communication skills to work closely with engineering, product, operations, and senior leadership

Our Tech Stack
Our backend platform is primarily built with:
- Ruby on Rails
- PostgreSQL
- AWS
- OpenTelemetry
