Our Team

Boat Safety Scheme Limited, or BSS, is a public safety initiative run as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. Our role in supporting navigation and harbour authorities, is to help reduce the risk of boat fires, explosions, carbon monoxide or pollution from boats harming visitors to the inland waterways, the waterways' workforce, other waterways users and property on or alongside the waterways.

The BSS comprises a team of 10 operating across the UK supporting 16 Navigation & Harbour Authorities. BSS colleagues are Canal & River Trust Employees permanently seconded full time to BSS Limited.

Our Opportunity

Boat Safety Scheme Limited (BSS) is in place to help minimise the risks to all visitors to the waterways and the waterways' workforce, and to help protect adjacent property, related to the condition, equipment and use of boats. The BSS is also used to minimise the risk of avoidable pollution from boats. (Note - The Scheme's work does not relate to the fixed infrastructure and plant of the waterways).

The Technical Administrator leads the administration of the Boat Safety Scheme Ltd (BSS), acting as a key customer interface while providing technical, financial, legal, risk, and quality management support to enable informed decision-making and ensure the BSS operates efficiently, and in compliance with defined governance and business objectives.

Facts and Figures:

  • 90,000 boat owner customers subject to the BSS examination and certification process
  • 18 navigation and harbour authorities participate in the BSS throughout the UK.
  • 19 organisations involved, active stakeholder engagement including all five national boat owner groups.
  • Formal/informal partnerships with around 100 external organisations
  • 200 authorised independent BSS Examiner

Location & Coverage

The position will be offered on a remote working basis, with a requirement to attend our main hub spaces and or other navigation & harbour authority offices throughout the UK as and when required for team working and collaborative meetings. Travel throughout the network of inland waterways is expected in order to conduct site visits.

BSS Limited supports numerous navigation and harbour authorities throughout the UK. We hold forum meetings in numerous locations but mainly based in Warwickshire and Hertfordshire. Our monthly meetings are held In Hemel Hempstead. When travelling on Boat Safety Scheme business, train tickets, and accommodation (when overnight stays are applicable) are bookable through designated apps and websites.

About the Role

The Technical Administrator will lead the administration of the Boat Safety Scheme (BSS), acting as a key customer contact and supporting risk, quality and operational decision-making.

The post holder will deliver efficient administrative support within a specialist marine safety environment, ensuring compliance with systems, processes and industry standards.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Operate business processes accurately and to scheduled deadlines using appropriate business systems within Boat Safety Scheme Limited
  • Ensure Salesforce & SAP data and information is input accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Provide technical administration support for the BSS applying specialist knowledge to achieve accurate and high-quality work.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant policies and procedures and produce relevant documents in a timely manner using Salesforce & MS office.
  • Review and redesign business processes to ensure efficient business support by liaising with key stakeholders.
  • Ensure processes comply with appropriate internal and external requirements.
  • Deal with confidential information ensuring all data is processed and protected appropriately.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers and a wide range of colleagues, ensuring all queries are dealt with in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Design, produce and maintain reports.
  • Collate and analyse data according to requirements, ensuring accuracy and integrity.
  • Support team members in general administration tasks as required.
  • Display the Trust values and behaviours at all times ensuring that diversity and inclusion are integrated into all aspects of Trust life and promote inclusion by challenging behaviour, practices, actions, or decisions that are counter to the objectives of the Trust’s policies and values.

About You

You have strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office, Salesforce, and SAP, and are confident maintaining accurate records, producing reports, and analysing data.

A proactive and effective communicator, you build positive relationships with customers and colleagues, manage competing priorities, and ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and quality standards. Educated to A Level standard or equivalent, you are committed to delivering a professional, accurate, and customer-focused service.

You hold a full UK driving licence, are comfortable working independently in a remote environment, and can effectively manage your workload while maintaining strong communication with colleagues and stakeholders.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Educated to A level standard or equivalent e.g. NVQ Level III Business Administration or ONC technician.
  • A confident communicator (verbal and written) with excellent organisational and planning skills.
  • Comprehensive IT skills and knowledge of business applications, having good capabilities using Windows, Android and IOS systems and platforms including knowledge of CRM software and tools.
  • Extensive knowledge of Salesforce, SAP functions and reports.
  • Comply with Canal & River Trust Health & Safety policy and defined standards, report incidents, accidents and near misses.
  • A working knowledge of data analysis.
  • Full UK Driving License
