The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), in partnership with Inspire People, is seeking a Technical Architect with experience creating and maintaining solution designs and strong end-to-end technical design accountability. Permanent role, hybrid working from Swansea (60% office-based), salary of up to £58,997 (inc allowances, based on skills and experience) plus 29% employer pension contribution and excellent Civil Service benefits.

DVLA delivers critical digital services that support more than 53 million people across the UK. As part of DVLA Digital’s ongoing transformation, you’ll help design secure, scalable and resilient solutions that support nationally important services, contributing to public safety, trust and service excellence at significant scale.
As a Technical Architect, you’ll work closely with engineering teams, other architects, delivery professionals, security and business stakeholders to turn complex technical and business challenges into practical, deliverable solutions. You’ll support product and delivery squads by developing and refining application and cloud-based designs, making sure they are understood, ready to build and aligned with the wider technical environment.

You’ll also help take designs through architecture governance and assurance, working collaboratively with stakeholders and adapting solutions as delivery progresses. The role is focused on software, applications and cloud architecture rather than traditional infrastructure, and would suit either a Technical Architect or a senior software engineer with relevant design exposure who is looking to move further into architecture.
As a Technical Architect, you will:
- Undertake structured analysis of technical issues, translating this analysis into technical designs that describe a solution.
- Be consulted about design and provide design patterns.
- Identify deeper issues that need fixing.
- Look for opportunities to collaborate and reuse components, communicating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Be responsible for leading the technical design of systems and services, justifying and communicating design decisions.
Essential skills for the Technical Architect include:
- Experience designing software/application-based solutions within a modern cloud environment
- Experience creating and maintaining solution designs in an iterative and collaborative environment
- Strong technical architecture and solution design capability
- Demonstrable accountability for end-to-end solution designs and stakeholder management
- Experience working with architectural governance processes and assurance practices

Alongside your salary of £44,241 to £58,997, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency contributes £12,816 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.

Additional Requirements
This role requires SC clearance, a condition of which is to have been present in the UK for 5 continuous years

60% Swansea office attendance (typically 3 days / week)
