Role/Job title: Technical Architect (Ecommerce Search)

Work Location: London, UK

Role type/Duration: 12 Months contract

Mode of working: Hybrid (3 days)

Day rate (for candidate): GBP 600 /day (Inside IR35)

The Role

This role will play a key part in shaping the search and product discovery capabilities for one of the UK's leading retailers. You will lead the architecture and design of enterprise-scale e-commerce search solutions, leveraging search platforms, AI-powered relevancy models, semantic search, vector search, cloud-native technologies, and large-scale data integration platforms. The role requires strong technical leadership and architecture expertise to deliver scalable, secure, and high-performing search experiences that improve customer engagement and business outcomes.

Your responsibilities:

  • Architect and design enterprise-scale e-commerce search platforms that support product discovery, navigation, personalization and merchandising strategies.
  • Define search architecture standards, indexing strategies, ranking models, relevancy frameworks and search optimization approaches.
  • Design and implement AI-powered search capabilities including semantic search, vector search, query understanding and personalized search experiences.
  • Lead integrations between search platforms and product catalogues, inventory systems, customer data platforms, recommendation engines, and digital commerce ecosystems.
  • Establish cloud-native architecture patterns ensuring scalability, resilience, security and operational excellence.
  • Partner with business stakeholders, product teams and engineering teams to translate search and customer experience requirements into technical solutions.
  • Drive technical governance, architecture reviews and engineering best practices across search platforms and services.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring while driving continuous improvement in search relevance, performance and customer experience.

Your Profile

Key Responsibilities

  • Define the enterprise architecture roadmap for digital commerce search and product discovery platforms.
  • Lead the design and implementation of search, indexing and relevance strategies across large-scale retail systems.
  • Develop scalable search solutions leveraging OpenSearch, Elasticsearch and AI-powered search technologies.
  • Establish search observability, performance monitoring and operational governance frameworks.
  • Drive search performance optimization, scalability planning and platform modernization initiatives.
  • Lead architecture reviews, technical design workshops and solution governance activities.
  • Support business growth through innovative search experiences that improve conversion, engagement and customer satisfaction.

  • Strong experience designing and architecting large-scale e-commerce search platforms using OpenSearch, Elasticsearch or equivalent technologies.
  • Expertise in search relevance tuning, ranking models, indexing strategies, faceted search and search analytics.
  • Experience implementing semantic search, vector search, embeddings and AI-driven search capabilities.
  • Strong understanding of distributed search architectures, performance optimization, scalability and resilience.
  • Experience designing API-driven, microservices-based and event-driven architectures.
  • Knowledge of cloud-native platforms, DevOps practices, infrastructure automation and containerized deployments.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership, stakeholder engagement and architecture governance across complex enterprise programs.
