Job Title: Technical Author Illustrator

Contract Type: Permanent

Location: In terms of location, we require this role to be based from our Weymouth or Bath office and we are happy to explore flexible and hybrid working arrangements. Please note that travel to customer sites or to attend meetings will be required.

About The Role

As a Technical Information and Documentation Specialist, you will support the delivery of high-quality technical projects and documentation services, ensuring outputs meet agreed standards for time, cost, and quality. Working independently and collaboratively, you will contribute to the production and maintenance of technical reports, templates, and project documentation in line with BMT’s quality procedures and documentation standards. You will provide guidance to authors, engineers, and authoring assistants, support the scoping and pricing of project tasks, and identify opportunities to improve processes and update strategies. The role requires strong attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to manage priorities while maintaining accurate project records. You will attend stakeholder meetings, escalate issues where appropriate, and, where required, lead small project teams to successfully deliver standalone tasks and project outputs.

About You

You will have proven experience in technical authoring and documentation within a defence or engineering environment, with practical knowledge of S1000D, Simplified Technical English, and UK MoD documentation standards. A recognised engineering qualification, or equivalent industry experience, will support your understanding of engineering systems, design changes, and their impact on technical documentation. You will be confident using Microsoft Office applications and technical publishing tools, with experience of illustration packages for creating and maintaining 2D and 3D technical content. Strong analytical and review skills are essential, enabling you to identify discrepancies, interpret complex technical information, and produce clear, accurate reports. You will be an effective communicator who enjoys collaborating with others, while also being capable of working independently and using your own initiative. Experience with Eagle EPS, Larson, or similar authoring tools would be advantageous.
