Opportunity

Are you an experienced baker who loves the technical side of bakery as much as getting hands-on with products?

We're looking for a Technical Baker to join our Food Applications team at Macphie. This is an exciting opportunity to become our bakery subject matter expert, using your practical experience and technical knowledge to help shape new products, solve bakery challenges and support our customers.

Not currently based in Aberdeenshire? For the right candidate, we're happy to discuss relocation support to help make the move a little easier

Working closely with our Product Design, Food Applications and Commercial teams, you'll play an important role in bringing bakery concepts to life. From running practical bakery trials and understanding how ingredients behave, through to challenging formulations and helping troubleshoot customer applications, you'll be the person our teams turn to for specialist bakery expertise.

This is a predominantly hands-on, development bakery-based role, but there will also be opportunities to support customer projects, demonstrations and technical discussions.

What you'll be doing:

  • Acting as a technical bakery expert across Macphie, sharing your knowledge with our Product Design, Food Applications and Commercial teams
  • Carrying out practical bakery trials to validate new products, concepts and formulations
  • Advising on bakery ingredients, their functionality and how formulation changes will impact the finished product
  • Testing and challenging products to make sure they deliver the required quality, consistency and performance
  • Troubleshooting bakery formulations and manufacturing challenges and recommending practical solutions
  • Assessing products across areas such as functionality, quality, shelf life and manufacturability
  • Supporting the development of innovative bakery solutions based on customer needs and emerging market trends
  • Providing specialist bakery expertise during customer projects, trials, demonstrations and meetings
  • Taking responsibility for the day-to-day management of our Development Bakery and ensuring it is maintained to Macphie standards
  • Keeping up to date with new ingredients, bakery technologies, consumer trends and developments across the industry
  • Building relationships with ingredient suppliers and industry contacts to identify new ideas and opportunities
  • Sharing your expertise and supporting colleagues to build their bakery knowledge and capability

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

If you're passionate about bakery, naturally curious about why products behave the way they do, and enjoy experimenting, problem-solving and turning ideas into great products, we'd love to hear from you.

Requirements

We're looking for someone who brings strong hands-on bakery experience combined with excellent technical knowledge. You might currently work within a commercial bakery, craft bakery, bakery development environment, ingredients business or an NPD/technical bakery role.

You'll ideally bring:

  • Extensive practical bakery experience gained within a commercial, development or craft bakery environment
  • Strong knowledge of bakery ingredients, formulations and manufacturing processes
  • Experience supporting bakery product development, trials or technical bakery projects
  • Broad bakery knowledge across products such as cakes, bread, sweet bakery and other baked goods
  • A good understanding of ingredient functionality and how changes to a formulation can affect the finished product
  • Strong practical baking skills and the confidence to apply your experience to new products and applications
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot bakery and formulation challenges
  • The confidence to provide technical recommendations and explain your thinking to different audiences
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with a collaborative approach to working across different teams
  • A genuine interest in bakery innovation, new ingredients, technologies and market trends
  • Good organisational and IT skills

Experience working alongside Commercial, NPD, Product Development or Technical teams would be advantageous, as would membership of a relevant bakery or food industry organisation.

Above all, we're looking for someone who is passionate about bakery and keen to use their experience in a role where their technical knowledge can genuinely influence product development, innovation and customer solutions.
