Technical Business Analyst – Market & Reference Data | Systematic Hedge Fund
A leading systematic trading firm is seeking a Technical Business Analyst to join a newly established Reference Data Technology team, helping design and build a new reference data platform from the ground up.
This is a highly technical BA role sitting at the intersection of business requirements, market data, data modelling, and technology. You'll work across Trading, Compliance, Operations, and Research to understand how reference data is used across the business, translating business and regulatory requirements into structured data models, datasets, and testable rules.
The initial focus will be on Equities and ETFs, offering the opportunity to become a key subject matter expert across the underlying data and its impact on the trading lifecycle. You'll work closely with Data and Platform Architects to shape the target model while helping define the data quality, controls, and workflows required to operate the new platform at scale.
The Role
- Translate complex business and regulatory requirements into data entity models, datasets, and structured technical requirements
- Work closely with Trading, Compliance, Operations, and Research to gather requirements and understand downstream data requirements
- Partner with Data and Platform Architects to translate business needs into scalable technical data models
- Help design the firm's new reference data platform, contributing to the underlying data structures, workflows, and operating model
- Act as a subject matter expert for data queries, system behavior, and the impact of reference data changes
- Define automated data quality rules, exception workflows, validation controls, and supporting metrics
- Develop and maintain data dictionaries, ERDs, requirements specifications, and other technical documentation
- Analyze how changes to reference data affect trading workflows and downstream systems
- Work with market and vendor data sources to understand data quality, mapping, and integration requirements
- Support the definition of processes around corporate actions, identifiers, effective dates, and downstream impacts
- Use SQL to investigate data, validate requirements, and support testing and issue resolution
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of the reference data platform and associated data governance processes

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
