Technical Business Development Manager – Automation & Material Handling
Service / Maintenance / Engineering
£55,000 – £80,000 + UNCAPPED COMMISSION + Company Car or Car Allowance
Hybrid Working | 1 day per week in the office
Location: Commutable from Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire, Greater London, Cambridgeshire or Oxfordshire
The Opportunity
We are recruiting for an experienced Technical Business Development Manager to join a well-established engineering business with over 35 years' experience in the installation, servicing, maintenance, and relocation of integrated automation and material handling systems.
The business specialises in solutions including automated storage systems, conveyors, cranes, and associated material handling equipment, with an established customer base across the UK and Europe.
This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious technical sales professional to take ownership of a new service and maintenance revenue stream, developing existing accounts while identifying and winning new business.
This is a hands-on, customer-facing role. You will be out meeting customers, visiting sites, understanding technical requirements, identifying opportunities, and developing long-term commercial relationships.
You will have the freedom to build your own pipeline and generate new business, supported by an experienced engineering, service, and project team.
The Role
- Identify and target new clients and business opportunities within automation and material handling
- Develop and grow service and maintenance contracts
- Identify opportunities across existing automated storage, conveyor, crane, and material handling systems
- Generate leads and manage the sales process from initial contact through to completion
- Arrange and conduct customer meetings and technical site visits
- Build strong, long-term relationships with new and existing customers
- Understand customer requirements and identify suitable technical and commercial solutions
- Work closely with engineering, service, and project teams to develop customer solutions
- Support service coordination and project management when required
- Develop existing accounts and identify further commercial opportunities
- Take ownership of your sales pipeline and deliver agreed targets
- Identify opportunities to increase recurring service and maintenance revenue

About You
We are looking for a commercially driven and technically minded sales professional who is adaptable, motivated, and excited by the opportunity to build and develop a new revenue stream.
You will ideally have previous technical sales, business development, or account management experience within automation, material handling, engineering, or a related industry.
Experience with any of the following would be highly beneficial:
- Automated storage systems
- Warehouse automation
- Conveyor systems
- Crane systems and installations
- Material handling equipment
- Service and maintenance contracts
- Mechanical handling systems
- Industrial automation
- Engineering solutions
An engineering background would be desirable, but strong industry knowledge, technical understanding, and proven sales ability are key.
