Claims Technical Lead

The Claims Technical Lead will primarily focus on the broad range of claims emanating from the Marine Liability and Transport and Logistics underwriting portfolio, however due to the growth of Markel the role may also offer the opportunity to handle claims emanating from the wider Marine, Energy and Casualty Division.

The Claims department seeks to be market-leaders in the provision of an efficient, cost-effective and professional service to our brokers and clients. Our vision is to be the most customer-centric, agile and value-adding claims team in the market. We strive to be proactive and flexible in the management of claims whilst maintaining our integrity. The claims team works collaboratively alongside the underwriting function in order to facilitate close communication and exchange of ideas and is an integral part of the product and customer service delivered to our clients.

The London Market Claims team handles both company market and Lloyd’s of London claims emanating from three core divisions; Marine, Energy and Construction, PFR & Cyber, and Specialty. The division writes in excess of $2bn GWP with a goal to grow significantly over the next few years.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Act as a technical point person within the Marine Team, providing claims support, guidance, and mentorship to the rest of the team, whilst also handling your own portfolio of complex claims, with a particular focus on claims emanating from the Marine Liability classes
  • Drive the claim's philosophy of being “The most customer-focused, nimble and value-adding claims team in the market”. Achieve this through: agreeing, reviewing, and completing your own objectives; your contribution at team meetings; effective oversight of DCAs and service providers; and interaction with key brokers. Passing back any key information in this regard to your team and underwriters as required.
  • Be responsible for handling your claims in accordance with the MINT claims and reserving philosophy, Markel Style, the Claims Handling Manual, and all regulatory and legislative requirements. Escalating claims to your manager, where appropriate, for input on strategy and/or reserving. Monitor, provide feedback, and ensure compliance on KPIs.
  • Support your Claims Manager and the Underwriters by providing technical input into product wordings and class-specific vendor and expert support.
  • Provide oversight and support on complex claims, claims in litigation, and watchlist claims, with particular focus on US liability claims providing feedback to Claims Manager and Strategic claims lead.
  • Work closely with the underwriting team, including providing feedback on claims experiences, contract wordings, claims data, or feedback for any renewal or new business and interact with placing and claims brokers in order to develop positive relationships and knowledge about the quality of our claims management at Markel.
  • Show a willingness to lead claims on all classes of business handled by the team, including attending underwriting meetings, learning about the class, and developing relationships with key customers in the claims handling process.
  • Drive team broker interaction to deliver a more customer-focused and value-adding service; share relevant information with the Claims Leadership team and the broader claims teams.

Key Skills

  • Take the lead and management of strategy on a portfolio of complex and/or high-value claims and be a point person to the relevant underwriters. Identify and discuss the most common areas and trends in claims causation. Segment and analyse the portfolio to assist in identifying the most profitable sub-segments and those areas where remedial action should be taken. Understand, monitor, provide feedback, and ensure compliance on KPIs.
  • Analyse and interpret data to improve Markel’s underwriting capabilities (e.g. loss performance and underwriting efficiency). Scope out problems/questions for analysis and work with actuarial/underwriting/claims manager or head of class to investigate.
  • Assist underwriters with the development of policy language to achieve desired coverage and propose wording amendments to manager and/or underwriters.
  • Understand customer needs and actively solicit and act upon feedback, providing solutions to problems. Form relationships outside of the claims function including underwriters, brokers, and key legal providers.
  • Negotiate complex coverage matters calmly and effectively in the interests of all parties. Competently represent MINT in the management of market and broker meetings.
  • Assist in the training of junior members of the claims team. Providing insight into specific claims aspects and helping them develop their own capabilities.
  • Have experience and knowledge in Marine Liability and other Marine classes and be able to talk expertly around the subject.
  • You will have achieved ACII accreditation, or be working towards it.
